The Taxation Division promotes voluntary compliance with all tax laws through education, assistance and customer service. The Sales Tax Accounting Section serves about 200,000 customers each year.

What We Do : The Sales Tax Accounting Section employs professionals serving as specialists in specific industries and are assigned claims which are significant in size and data from both individuals and businesses seeking a refund for Colorado’s sales and use tax. We are a part of the Taxation Division and our mission includes voluntary compliance with all Colorado state tax laws through information, education, assistance and customer service.

The Typical Day of an Analyst III : The unit is actively seeking an Analyst to perform in depth reviews and analysis regarding claims for refunds that are often complex in nature. Moreover, this position may specialize in either two or more of the following areas of tax claims manufacturing, industrial utility, computer software, rural broadband, biotechnology, medical technology and affordable housing industries. As a Sales Tax Accounting team member you will:

  • performing varied difficult and complex analysis for both claims assigned for initiation and claims assigned for review and approval;

  • vetting transactions to ensure validity;

  • separating, comparing, sorting, and filtering data via spreadsheets and databases;

  • reviewing data contained in the spreadsheet to the invoices, purchase orders, contracts, work orders, financial statements;

  • initiate and process Claim for Refunds;

  • may provide training or act as a resource to staff in the Refunds and Protest units on sales tax related inquiries and;

  • assist other parties with inquiries that relate to claims through contact with CPAs, tax representatives, taxpayers, citizens advocate or other units via correspondence, web messages, email or phone.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet one of the following or any combination of experience/education to meet the minimum (MQ) qualifications:

OPTION 1:

Six (6) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position (i.e., auditing, tax accounting, or as otherwise determined by the department).

OR

OPTION 2:

Four (4) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position (i.e., auditing, tax accounting, or as otherwise determined by the department).

AND

Associates degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment (i.e., Business, Business Administration, Accounting, or as otherwise determined by the department).

OR

OPTION 3:

Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position (i.e., auditing, tax accounting, or as otherwise determined by the department).

AND

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment (i.e., Business, Business Administration, Accounting, or as otherwise determined by the department).

Substitution:

Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Prior experience using the state GenTax system

  • Prior or current experience performing reviews/analysis of complex manufacturing and industrial utility tax claims

  • Problem solving, critical thinking, research, and a strong attention to detail

  • Strong analytical skills

  • An ability to identify patterns and discrepancies

  • Possessing and utilizing great organization skills

  • Possessing and utilizing time management skills

  • Advanced level knowledge and application of spreadsheets (Excel)

  • An ability to effectively communicate both orally and written

  • Solid applied practical understanding of manufacturing, industrial utility, computer software, rural broadband, biotechnology, medical technology and affordable housing industries

    Conditions of Employment with the CDOR :

    Employees are in a position of public trust in the performance of their job duties and must operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and public confidence.

    As a condition of employment with the CDOR, all personnel must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations, therefore all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy. Final candidates must also complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions based on duties may require scheduled background investigations .
