The Bioanalytics Systems & Technologies Group focuses on driving analytics to take advantage of vast and rapidly expanding biological datasets to address national security needs. The Group’s efforts include developing software architectures and systems, bioinformatics tools, and AI algorithms to further the nation’s efforts in chemical and biological defense, biosecurity, public and global health and warfighter performance.

Job Description

The Bioanalytics Systems & Technologies Group is seeking an IT Systems Engineer who will be responsible for all aspects of IT for the Group, including Linux, Windows and Mac system administration, as well as playing a role in the Group’s AWS Cloud management/support. The position requires strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision. The successful candidate will demonstrate a collaborative, service-based approach to IT. Candidate will be a senior member of the Group’s IT team, and as such will need to be able to handle tasks with minimal or no guidance, but at the same time will need to be able to work well as part of a Division wide IT team.

Job Responsibilities

  • Linux Administration: Installing/Maintaining Linux systems, ensuring security compliance, responding to scan results, proactively remediating issues by patching and modifying systems and containers as needed.

  • Install, configure, and manage Windows, Mac, and Linux desktops/servers, as well as some network infrastructure devices. Install and maintain commercial software as needed.

  • Maintain the integrity and security of servers and systems, ensure security compliance, respond to scan results, proactively remediating issues by patching and modifying systems as needed.

  • Assist in the management of Group’s AWS/Cloud Environments including user management, database/RDS backups, system imaging, and deployments

  • Management of Group’s VMWare/vSphere virtual environments including virtual machine provisioning and resource management (disk, CPU, and RAM monitoring).

  • Provide general IT user support for all staff members in Group 25, interfacing and collaborating with central IT and Security departments to utilize enterprise provided services when possible.

  • Procure computer systems, peripherals, software, etc. as required, and formulate, execute and maintain a hardware and software asset lifecycle management plan.

  • Create documentation on IT systems and procedures to satisfy certification, technical staff, and end users.

More Responsibilities

  • Author and manage Data Security Plans (DSP) for unique system and operating requirements outside established security policies. Draw system and networking diagrams and concisely report system plans; act as the liaison to Security Department in implementing and maintaining DSPs.

  • Manage networks, file shares, virtual infrastructures, and some NAS environments.

  • Work closely with project teams and developers to provide expertise to solve technical problems.

  • Interact with third-party technology vendors, internal providers, sponsors and other outside organizations as needed.

  • Write scripts and use configuration management tools to automate repetitive tasks and manage complex deployments.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or other related scientific/technical discipline and 2+ years of relevant experience OR 5+ years of relevant experience.

  • A solid understanding of, and experience with managing Linux (RedHat/CentOS, and Ubuntu)

  • Experience with provisioning, configuring, and administering Windows, and Mac OS.

  • Strong skills and experience in IP Networking, including LAN, WAN, and a solid understanding of VLANs and firewalls.

  • Ability to research, diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and networking problems.

  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to clearly document complex operations, and to articulate needs/requirements.

  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to all types of users and all type of user requests, always with a positive attitude and demeanor.

  • Ability to be work well independently, and at the same time be able to work well in a team environment.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, including ESXi configuration, and VCenter), networking, storage, and user access.

  • Experience managing AWS/Cloud Environments.

  • Database Administration, servers and data.

  • Management of file shares, and SAN/NAS environments, specifically NetApp Servers

  • Experience with containers and container orchestration tools, Docker, Ansible, Tanzu, or Kubernetes.

  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, MS Active Directory and LDAP.

  • General experience working with collaboration tools such as Confluence, Teams, Zoom and SharePoint, as well as with Microsoft Office Suite tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Outlook).

  • Work experience in mission critical environments is highly desirable.

  • Experience working directly with end-users such as developers in troubleshooting simple and complex environments.
