What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking an experienced R&D Systems Engineer to join our multidisciplinary teams performing critical work to maintain a safe and reliable national defense while advancing warhead deployment of the land-based leg of the nuclear deterrent triad! Our people are designing and building a suite of flight test vehicles to enable W87-0 integration on the Air Force’s Sentinel missile. This is a highly collaborative work environment where successful candidates will be involved in design maturation, hardware assembly, and qualification testing. On any given day, you may be called on to:
Develop detailed understanding of customer requirements and ensure maturation of requirements for specific systems aspects or components
Collaborate with system engineers and component engineers
Provide technical guidance on critical design elements
Perform technical analyses and trade studies to inform risk-based decisions while balancing programmatic cost and schedule constraints
Conduct test planning to verify requirements and qualify hardware
Direct execution of tests and data analysis to develop systems level understanding of collected data and lead anomaly resolution process
Support ongoing field exercises
Present to diverse audiences at technical design reviews and programmatic meetings
Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams

Salary Range:
$130,100 - $258,900
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
Master’s degree in an engineering or science discipline plus 1 year relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree in related discipline plus 5 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
Experience in one or more of the following areas:
developing requirements and concepts of operation
performing trade studies
leading system design activities
performing project management
generating technical documentation
developing and testing prototype systems
analyzing test data
troubleshooting prototype electronics
qualifying systems
identifying failure modes and performing failure analysis
overseeing production activities
Willingness and ability to travel up to 25%
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
Experience with telemetry and sensor integration and test
Experience with RF system design and characterization
Experience in digital or analog design
Experience working with DOE, NNSA, DoD, or Federally Funded Research and Development Centers
Experience developing briefings or communicating succinctly to stakeholders
An active U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance
About Our Team:
W87-0 Systems is comprised of the W87-0 System Engineering and W87-0 Sentinel System Integration teams. The W87-0 System Engineering Department (8287) at SNL/CA is responsible for the Stockpile Support and Stockpile Maintenance activities associated with the W87 nuclear warheads. This Systems Engineering organization performs the planning, development, integration, and coordination with the DoD customer (USAF) for the DOE, supporting the primary national defense mission of the laboratory. The W87-0 Sentinel System Integration Department (8288) at SNL/CA is responsible for certification of the W87-0 warhead for first flight on the Air Force’s Sentinel missile. Activities include development and assembly of flight test units to collect environmental data from test flights and developing a Joint Test Assembly (JTA) to certify the weapon system for operational use. Our diverse team of engineers and technical professionals provide expertise in multiple subject areas, including systems, electrical, mechanical, software and qualification engineering. This work is performed with an array of mission partners across a spectrum of security boundaries.
