rRESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities including:
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in reading/literacy education.
  • Supervising students in field experiences in various area school settings.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned master\'s degree in literacy/reading or closely related field which is supported by an adequate quantity and quality of literacy/reading graduate courses conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting higher education institution (or equivalent from an international accrediting body).
  • A minimum of 3 years of successful classroom teaching experience in P-8 settings.
  • Informed understandings of the field, including evidence-based methodologies, reading assessment, and effective instructional best practices.
  • Evidence of and/or potential for successful scholarship, teaching, service and leadership.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expertise in early/emergent literacy and/or middle level literacy.
  • Familiarity with child and/or adolescent development, including motivation and achievement; as well as, standards and assessment, curriculum development and planning.
  • University teaching and supervisory experience in reading, literacy or related field.
  • Eligibility for licensure as a Reading Specialist in the state of Illinois.
  • Experience in providing professional development and/or literacy coaching.
  • A record of commitment to diverse student populations.
  • Experience in undergraduate and graduate traditional and online instruction and development of traditional and online courses.
  • Demonstrated ability to actively collaborate and communicate with colleagues and public-school educators and implement literacy events in the community.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be \"in hand\" at the time of application.

THE SCHOOL:

The successful candidate will be joining Western Illinois University\'s vibrant new School of Education. The School of Education houses 14-degree programs (graduate and undergraduate); numerous state teaching endorsements; a Preschool; a Reading Center; a Science Center; a Social Studies Center; and provides coursework to support undergraduate secondary teacher education programs housed across the WIU campus.
