Work Schedule: The days and hours of work may vary with some non-traditional work hour requirements.

Travel: Travel for this position may be up to 15% of the time.

This position has contact with criminal justice-involved individuals.

Corrections Agents provide investigative services to the court/releasing authority and supervisory and/or referral services to individuals committed to the Department of Corrections in order to protect public safety and facilitate law-abiding behavior.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Completing assessments of individuals in order to determine/recommend appropriate supervision levels; preparing case plans.

  • Supervising individuals to monitor behavior and compliance with probation/releasing authority conditions; completing progress reports and apprehension/detention orders.

  • Testifying in court as needed.

Corrections Agent positions also prepare diagnostic, pre- and post-dispositional investigation reports on individuals to be used by the courts, correctional staff and releasing authority to make appropriate sentencing, case planning and releasing decisions.

Minimum Qualifications

To be qualified for and considered for this position, applicants must meet all of the minimum qualifications listed below. Ensure that your resume contains descriptions of your work experiences sufficient for comparison against the requirements stated below and indicate the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.

  • One (1) year of work experience with clients from a diverse background in the fields of corrections, social work, social services, education, chemical dependency, mental health, residential treatment, or related field.

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree may substitute for one (1) year of experience; completion of an associate’s degree may substitute for six (6) month of experience.

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be further assessed on the following:

  • The ability to document and maintain client case records.

  • Human relations skills sufficient to represent the Minnesota Department of Corrections or county in the community; maintain effective working relationships; and work with a diverse, and at times, adversarial or resistive clientele.

  • Oral and written communication skills, sufficient to speak in public, testify in court, and write clear and concise reports.

  • The ability to make case decisions, set priorities and schedule/use time effectively.

  • Having and maintaining a valid driver's license.

Corrections Agent Senior/Career

To qualify for consideration as a Corrections Agent Senior/Career, you must either be a current or former MN Department of Corrections employee in the Corrections Agent Senior/Career job classification; or be employed by a Minnesota Community Corrections Act county, county probation agency, or another public jurisdiction and be eligible for an intergovernmental transfer or hire to the MN Department of Corrections at the Corrections Agent Senior/Career level

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:

  • Completion of a degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Education, Law, Law Enforcement, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology or a Human Services related field with an emphasis in corrections/criminal justice .

  • Experience working with the Minnesota Department of Corrections as a Corrections Agent or Corrections Security Caseworker, or with another jurisdiction as a Probation Officer or Case Manager. Note: Experience may include Internships, practicums and/or paid work experience, including work out of class assignments.

  • Experience working in a criminal justice/human services setting.

  • Experience completing risk/needs assessments.

  • Knowledge of case planning and applying intervention techniques based on research-based principles for long standing client behavior change.

  • Demonstrated skills in utilizing motivational interviewing to increase intrinsic motivation to change and promote skill building by utilizing Evidence Based Practices (EBP) and core correctional practices.

Additional Requirements

The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.

Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
