SUMMARY

Provides coverage for department's front desk when needed, to include answering telephone, directing patients and/or visitors to appropriate area, completing required paperwork prior to lab procedures being performed and prepares test materials and ensures all materials are available for the testing.

LOCATION: Massena Hospital

DEPARTMENT: Lab

SCHEDULE: 8 Hour shift

ATTRIBUTES
  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Required: National Accredited Certification in Phlebotomy
  • Preferred: Must possess interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and/or families in order to gain their cooperation and alleviate apprehension.
  • Preferred: Previous experience as a phlebotomist, nursing assistant, or other allied health care worker
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists Laboratory technical staff as needed, performing tasks such as retrieving and printing reports, separating and preparing specimens for the reference laboratory, logging specimens in laboratory computer system, etc.
  • Delivers completed lab reports to Emergency Department and other areas of the hospital as needed.
  • Explains procedure to patient before beginning and cleans patient's skin in the area from which blood is to be drawn.
  • Collects blood samples by micro collection techniques and venipuncture, finger, toe or heel stick as required for infants, children, adults, and elderly patients.
  • Draws specimen for blood cultures and alcohols which requires special preparation of patients.
  • Completes chain of custody forms and collects for urine drug screens.
  • Reports changes in patient's behavior or condition to nursing personnel or Laboratory Director and physician's office.
  • Draws blood and collects other specimens as required for patients in nursing homes and other health care facilities in which the hospital provides phlebotomy services.
  • Labels test tubes with appropriate data (e.g., date and test time when appropriate, patient name, social security number) immediately following phlebotomy.
  • Notifies Medical Technologist, reporting the status and location of the specimen, when a sample has been collected.
  • Signs requisition and notes the date and time of collection. Logs the specimen in the laboratory information system.
  • Disposes of used needles according to hospital procedures and returns specimen to the various laboratory departments.
  • As hospital courier, is responsible or delivering and picking-up items such as, but not limited to delivering completed lab reports and appropriate supplies to physician's offices, outreach clinics, nursing homes, and other health care facilities as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining hospital courier car. Reports any problems immediately to supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

PAY RANGE: $16.38 - $21.83

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
