Amazon Sr. Manufacturing Engineer - Ground Support Equipment, Kuiper Launch Operations in Merritt Island, Florida

Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

The Sr. Manufacturing Engineer - Ground Support Equipment is the technical expert in design, analysis, and operation of launch site ground support equipment (GSE). This role interfaces directly with launch site engineers and management to understand GSE needs for new and existing processing facilities. Additionally, the Sr. Manufacturing Engineer - Ground Support Equipment will develop cost estimations, lead procurement, manage vendors, run design reviews, establish acceptance criteria and commission hardware. This position is responsible for managing all phases for new and existing ground support equipment in support of Kuiper launch operations.

The ideal candidate is comfortable in a highly technical setting and leads collaboration with other departments to reach the best solution to any problem. The candidate will have extensive experience with mechanical and electrical system development for space hardware integration and test, with particular focus on satellite processing.

Export Control Requirement:

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Candidates must be 18 years or older with the ability to understand and adhere to all job requirements and safety guidelines.

Key job responsibilities

• Design and manage GSE through development and build cycles to support launch operations.

• Coordinate with launch operations personnel to understand operational requirements and develop GSE to meet those requirements.

• Develop and approve specifications for performance, fabrication, acceptance test and maintenance.

• Manage external partners to ensure GSE meets specifications and timelines.

• Establish technical documentation for maintenance and proofload requirements.

• Perform analysis (hand calculations and finite element analysis) to support design.

• Design of concept CAD models using Nastran or CATIA.

• Maintain and report on equipment schedule, budget, and technical status.

• Implement and continuously improve GSE operations.

• Assembly, integration, and test takt time and cost optimization planning.

• Shift schedule will vary, depending on production/launch schedules

• Must be willing and able to perform extended travel up to 25% annually, either domestically or internationally as business needs demand.

A day in the life

The Sr. Manufacturing Engineer will spend significant amounts of time collaborating with engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams to determine GSE needs. They will be responsible for designing and procuring new hardware to support operations while maintain existing GSE. They will lead GSE efforts at the launch site and address root cause of failures and issues, implement corrective actions and hardware modifications.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures

  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, material science or other related discipline, or relevant experience

  • 5+ years of technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines.

  • 5+ years of experience with the design and integration of mechanical systems, electrical systems/components, and/or lifting fixtures

  • 5+ years experience in CAD modeling and drawings in programs such as Nastran, Solid Works, or CATIA.

  • Able to obtain and maintain a US Passport and Must meet customs entry requirements to include but not limited to: Yellow Fever vaccine and other immunization requirements as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

  • Able to pass Kennedy Space Center background checks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent

  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production

  • Experience with the project management of technical projects

  • (Finite Element Modeling) FEM analysis of mechanical and structural components.

  • Highly familiar with QTP/ATP and production test methods.

  • Formal training/certification in Operational Excellence Systems (Lean, 5S, Six Sigma, etc.) a plus.

  • Strong organizational, analytical, root cause analysis and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to stand for long periods of time and perform repetitive assembly operations

  • Able to climb and down ladders, work in tight spaces, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching may be required to perform the functions of this position

  • Able to lift at least 25 lbs. unassisted
