General Motors Engineering Group Manager - Safety Shared Service in Milford, Michigan

Work Arrangement:

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, MI three times a week, at minimum.

The Role:

The Vehicle Mechatronics Embedded Controls (VMEC) Build Factory department provides shared services to support development and delivery of our key embedded controls. Our responsibilities include architecture for software, quality, and safety design, as well as process leadership, quality assurance, software Integration, and release. We are a highly capable engineering team that focuses on delivering customer value with safety and quality at top of mind; and we always continue to grow, innovate & excel.

We are looking for an Engineering Group Manager for the Safety Shared Service team that is comprised of both Safety Design Software Architects and a team of controls and software engineers responsible for the implementation of safety-critical system monitors. This team supports products across many mechatronic domains (Engine, Transmission, Vehicle Dynamics, Battery Systems, Electrified Propulsion, Thermal, and Body controls) and will work with the product teams, System Safety Engineering, and suppliers to help ensure system safety requirements and strategies are met.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Enable self-organizing, empowered teams to define safety software architecture, design algorithms, and implement safety-critical software required to support our safety-critical controls product line on time with quality

  • Proactively collaborate with System Safety Engineering and product teams to ensure our products meet safety requirements and comply with regulations

  • Guide your team to develop actionable strategy and support execution in an agile framework across multiple domains and disciplines

  • Foster an environment for high-performing team dynamics, continuous flow, and relentless improvement

  • Mentor, coach, and develop employees and their careers

  • Establish and monitor budget for responsible activities

  • Execute resource planning for required activities

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering to include Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, and Systems Engineering

  • Minimum 7+ years of engineering experience related to embedded control systems, calibration, and/or related hardware

  • Minimum 3 years in functional or system safety or safety-critical embedded controls design and development

  • Be familiar with ISO26262 and applicable FMVSS standards

  • Demonstrated critical thinking/focus on failure modes and securing the safety of the entire vehicle

  • Demonstrated results in successful project execution

  • Excellent multi-functional communication and leadership skills - able to get multiple teams moving in the same direction

  • Demonstrated ability to "Deal with Ambiguity" while driving timely decision making

  • Demonstrated ability to “Be Bold” and “Win with Integrity” when considering safety factors for launch readiness

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master of Science in Engineering and/or Master of Business Administration

  • 10+ years of engineering experience related to embedded control systems, calibration, and/or related hardware

  • Leadership experience of teams of engineers responsible for developing or testing embedded control systems or related hardware

  • Demonstrated ability to: achieve results through effective teamwork, lead numerous projects with different focal areas to successful completion, and manage and measure work through metrics, data, and results

  • Prior experience in propulsion or vehicle dynamics domains

  • Experience managing a global team that is geographically dispersed

  • Working knowledge of ISO26262 and embedded controls development processes and tools that are in support of safety life cycle processes
