United States Steel Shift Manager I - Maintenance in Minnesota

The Shift Manager - Maintenance position is responsible for leading a crew of maintenance technicians (mechanical and electrical) in the safe, efficient, and cost-effective maintenance of the DR Plant’s assets.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer the U. S. Steel safety program to ensure a safe work environment.

  • Coordinate, organize, and direct activities of the maintenance crew.

  • Work closely with vendors, contractors as well as other departments across the facility.

  • Monitor all steps of the operation to ensure Standard Quality and Operating Practices and guidelines are being followed.

  • Participate in the development and/or revision Safety, Quality, Operating, and Maintenance procedures to ensure they drive world class results.

  • Provide technical and hands-on support during the construction and commissioning of the facility.

  • Reduce unit downtime and improve reliability of the facility’s equipment.

  • Assists workers in diagnosing malfunctions in machinery and equipment.

  • Coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance with a team of mechanical/electrical maintenance staff.

  • Use technical knowledge, equipment documentation, safety procedures, and maintenance schedules to follow, improve, and develop preventative and routine maintenance programs.

  • Devise and implement cost saving strategies.

  • Develop and implement methods and procedures designed to eliminate maintenance problems and improve product quality.

  • Perform administrative activities such as scheduling crews, completing work orders, conducting safety activities, and compiling other reports as necessary.

  • Due to the nature of our business, our facilities operate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year. Therefore, this position may require rotating shift work, as well as weekend and/or holiday work

Requirements:

  • H.S. Diploma or GED required

  • Minimum 2 years work experience supervising crews required. Prior experience in a union environment or similar military leadership experience is a plus.

  • Experience working rotating shifts, which will include extended workdays, weekends, and holidays.

  • Prior experience with the maintenance of taconite processing equipment is a plus.

  • This is a safety sensitive position requiring drug and alcohol testing.
