Summary This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a Hudson Valley VA Healthcare Center. This position is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee. This position performs both janitorial and custodial services at the VA Medical Center located in Montrose, NY. Responsibilities The Housekeeping Aid Leader engages with all employees to provide purpose, direction and motivation in accomplishing all tasks, while training the employee in proper procedures and techniques to meet or exceed desired outcomes of workload and safety. Pass on to other workers instructions received from the supervisor, and starts work (e.g, by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group). Check work in progress and when finished, checks for compliance with supervisor's instruction on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Answer workers questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions and other directives (e.g technical orders) obtains needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems that come up during work. Provide information to supervisor on status and progress of work, cause of delays, problems (e.g. and overall work operations and additional on the job training requirements for individual employees). Operating powered equipment such as scrubbing machines, buffers, carpet cleaning machines and/ or industrial vacuums. Ensures that safety and housekeeping rules are followed (e.g, ensures that machines capacities aren't exceeded and that tools are properly used). Demonstrates proper work methods and ensures that a clean and sanitary environment is maintained. Pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying or moving cleaning equipment around for several hours or more at a time. As a leader, execute a full range of housekeeping activities in patient and non-patient care areas. May be required to take the lead in textile distribution and inventory management, uniform management and Patient Assistance Program. Perform full range of EMS duties including but not limited to floor maintenance, wall washing, cleans doors, doorframes, baseboard corners and edges, stairwells, defrosts and cleans patient care - refrigerators and ice machines in nourishment kitchen areas; cleans stainless steel on storage instrument cabinets and counters, elevators, wards, diet-kitchens and nurse utility rooms. Provides on-the-job training to all employees assigned. Identifies and recommends to the Supervisor employees that need remedial training based on observations made in the work site. Perform other duties as assigned. This position has no formal disciplinary authority over staff in the execution of daily tasks. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather. PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position. Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e., broken bones) when working on ladders, or when using 30-100-pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials. Education Not applicable.
