The Mechanical Staff Engineer has a strong practical background in mechanical engineering including mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, component design, manufacturing processes, assembly and fastening techniques, data collection & analysis and technical writing. This position includes both design of new centrifugal compressors & components, and sustaining engineering activities for existing compressor families. Additional sustaining duties will include assisting product technical support, manufacturing (factory), quality, and other compressor & chiller engineering personnel in the business unit globally. This position is based in York, PA. Candidates must be commuting distance, or willing/able to relocate.

What you will do

Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team developing state-of-the art centrifugal compressors, with focus on advanced design applications. Incorporate a broader system/platform view as part of the process.

Use standard and advanced technical principles, theories, concepts, techniques, processes, and best practices in the field and apply them to compressor design, development, and complex system-level troubleshooting.

Manage prototype builds, coordinate the activities of engineering design drafters and technicians in support of development and testing activities.

Communicate/collaborate with designers to create drawings and define bills of material. Review and approve drawings prior to release for manufacturing.

Apply process and project management techniques to execute projects within budget and schedule.

Coach/mentor and develop junior engineers.

How you will do it

With guidance from senior staff engineering personnel over 1-2 years, become a subject matter expert for centrifugal compressors when communicating with customers, chiller and applications engineers, manufacturing, and field service personnel.

Create engineering change notices (ECN's) to effectively document and communicate technical detail when design changes are needed.

Participate in and/or lead formal problem-solving activities when necessary. Lead design improvement efforts for cost, performance, functionality, manufacturability, and reliability.

Participate in customer-related quality activities (8D) as the compressor engineering representative on the team, utilizing experience with problem solving and root cause corrective action to drive resolution.

Apply manufacturing experience to ensure designs are robust for manufacturing, assembly, and service.

Qualifications

BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and 7+ years of professional experience is required.

Demonstrated practical background indicating a strong mechanical aptitude.

Working knowledge and understanding of finite element analysis.

Practical experience with high-speed rotating equipment design including impellers, fluid film or magnetic journal and thrust bearings, lube-oil circuits, mechanical face shaft seals, shafting and couplings is strongly preferred.

Working knowledge of piping, flanged connections, valves, pressure & temperature instrumentation, and fluid sealing methodologies such as o-ring and gasketed joints is strongly preferred.

Experience with pressure vessels/pressure boundary components is preferred.

Strong background in manufacturing processes such as machining and assembly techniques is preferred and familiarity with iron, steel and aluminum casting processes is desirable.

The ability to manage work on multiple projects simultaneously is required and strong project management skills are essential.
