Smithsonian Institution Engineering Technician (Mechanical) in New York, New York

Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). The Office of Facilities Management and Reliability provides the full range of building services through maintenance and operational zones. More than one selection may be made from this announcement. Responsibilities The Engineering Technician (Mechanical) is responsible for installing, repairing, overhauling, rebuilding, modifying, testing and troubleshooting integrated mechanical and electrical systems. In this position, you will: Install, repair, overhaul, rebuild, modify, test, program, and troubleshoot major integrated mechanical and electrical systems such as Siemens APOGEE Building Automation System, Direct Digital Controls, HVAC, etc. Conduct engineer analyses and evaluations of technical proposals and potential projects to estimate savings of energy and water. Design systems modifications and prepare procurement packages for repairs to the systems listed above and energy and water metering systems. Analyze, evaluate, and report on complex mechanical and electrical systems operations. (Must submit a copy of your license) Must be available to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations. Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position. Work requires travel away from the normal duty station on a regular basis. Qualifications Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as installing, inspecting, testing and making repairs to Distributed Digital Controls, HVAC systems and the Siemens APOGEE Building Automation Systems with Desigo Software or a similar system. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience.
