Noblis Engineering Services Agent - Machinery Controls in Norfolk, Virginia

Responsibilities

This position is for a waterfront machinery controls system engineer. The main function of the candidate will be to provide system design, installation and verification/validation support of the modernized Machinery Control Systems (MCS) on the USS ARLEIGH BURKE class of destroyer. The candidate will have electrical/systems engineering experience and the ability to troubleshoot control systems with the use of test tools, system documentation, and electrical schematics. The candidate will be expected to work on a flexible work schedule to ensure priority tasking can be completed in the allotted timeframe. Straight time overtime will be compensated and is expected on a semi-regular basis while ships are in an active availability. The candidate will be tasked by and report to technical leads within Code 552. The candidate will be expected to provide documented status updates on a regular basis.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Troubleshoot control systems with the use of system documentation and electrical schematics

  2. Provide shipboard test support for all variants of fielded systems

  3. Provide shipboard software and hardware installation support of all variants of fielded systems shipboard

  4. Provide documented status updates on a regular basis

  5. Act as a liaison between shipboard test team and technical leads back in Philadelphia

  6. Maintain personal source of information between jobs and tasking

  7. Aid in test procedure development, edits, and implementation

  8. Review technical documentation related to all variants of fielded systems and future fielded systems

  9. Provide engineering input to the design of future MCS systems

Required Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering is required or equivalent work experience.

  • At least 2-5 years of experience in electrical engineering or computer engineering as it pertains to control systems in an industrial environment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful applicants must either have an active government security clearance (DoD Secret) or the ability to receive approval upon position acceptance.

  • Must have a valid US passport or the ability to obtain one upon position acceptance.

  • This position requires heavy onsite workload at Shipyards, and Naval Stations. It will be mandatory to obtain and maintain necessary clearance for Shipyards and Naval Stations.

Essential Skills:

  • Experience tracing signals and troubleshooting, diagnosing and isolating cause for electrical failures and anomalies

  • Proficiency in reading electrical diagrams

  • Proficiency in the use of test tools associated with test and troubleshooting electrical systems

  • Proficiency in the use of diagnostic tools associated with control system troubleshooting (i.e. multimeter, oscilloscope, signal generator, etc)

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite of applications

  • Proficient in basic computer/laptop use including advanced operations

  • Basic knowledge of network troubleshooting tools

  • Basic technical writing ability

  • Ability to self-motivate and complete tasks efficiently

  • Ability to communicate effectively within an integrated team environment including ability to liaise confidently and professionally with a diverse range of people

Desired Qualifications

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures associated with industrial control systems

  • Experience with Versa Module Eurocard (VME) systems

  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems

  • Advanced computer skills to include use of HyperTerminal, Putty, or an equivalent serial interface

  • Ability to use Wireshark for network data capture, analysis, and troubleshooting

  • US Navy shipboard experience in engineering department

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Regular expected travel frequency away from your permanent location may be up to 25%Off hour and weekend work will be expected to meet deliverables and ship test schedule

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The work is typically performed onboard US Navy Ships (pier side and at sea), which requires proper safety precautions and ability to go up and down shipboard stairways (ladders); work may require some physical effort in the handling of light materials, boxes, or equipment up to 50 LBs per person.

  • The waterfront work location does not include an office. If not on the ship, there are trailers with shared workspace used for daily meetings, daily reports, or other required work to meet the deliverables.

  • Home office can be used for day to day work during ship installation downtime as approved by leads on case by case basis.

Salary at Noblis is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the combination of education, certifications, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, internal and external equity, location, and clearance level, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements and applicable employment laws. The projected compensation range for this position is provided within the posting and are based on full time status. Part time staff receive a prorated salary based on regularly scheduled hours. The estimated minimum and maximum displayed represents the broadest range for this position (inclusive of high geographic and high clearance requirements), and is just one component of Noblis’ total compensation package for employees.
