Choice Hotels Public Relations Manager (Hybrid) in North Bethesda, Maryland

The External Communications Team builds awareness for Choice’s collection of hotel brands and cross-functional, enterprise-wide initiatives and business priorities with consumers, franchisees, the development community and other critical audiences. As a key member of our External Communications Team, you will ensure the right message is delivered to the right audience through earned media placements and speaking opportunities.

Your Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager, Public Relations, and other internal stakeholders to develop and execute integrated public relations strategies across various segments, brands, and enterprise level initiatives.

  • Keep messaging relevant and sharp for brand segments and enterprise level initiatives.

  • Responsible for generating proactive earned media coverage across various verticals including lifestyle/consumer, hospitality trade, advertising trade, general business, regional travel and other. Leverage reactive media opportunities.

  • Responsible for setting up media interviews for key internal stakeholders and preparing them with briefing materials in advance.

  • Responsible for securing speaking opportunities for key executives and hotel segment leaders and preparing them in advance.

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with key media across the lifestyle/consumer, hospitality trade, advertising trade, general business, regional travel and other verticals.

  • Manage deadlines and key deliverables, as well as quality control and editorial review of content including press releases, blog posts and other materials.

  • Travel to key conferences, grand opening and ground break events, as needed.

  • Collaborate on reactive responding to crises, including collaborating cross function, drafting responses and speaking with the media if needed.

  • Analyze data to anticipate and track emerging issues, and external stakeholder reactions that may have a negative impact on Choice Hotels.

  • Manage monthly accruals, invoicing and contracting across the department.

  • Coordinate all departmental contracts for legal reviews as needed.

Your Experience, Skills & Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism, marketing or equivalent experience.

  • At least 5 years’ experience in media relations or related field is required.

  • Exceptional communications skills, especially written and editorial ability, as well as verbal and non-verbal skills, and correspondence fluency. Familiarity with Associated Press style.

  • Ability to project manage, multi-task and juggle multiple demands and quickly shifting priorities.

  • Excellent follow-through and attention to detail.

  • Team player capable of building relationships and managing projects throughout project cycle.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

  • Demonstrates key competencies including action-oriented, drives results, and is resilient.

Your Team

This is an individual contributor role that will report to the Senior Manager, Public Relations. You will have 1 peer teammate and collaborate with cross functional departments on a regular basis.

Your Work Location

As our Public Relations Manager, you will be based in our beautiful, state-of-the-art worldwide corporate headquarters in North Bethesda, MD. Less than 15 miles from Washington, DC, we’re located one block away from the North Bethesda Metro station, with service on the Red Line and the MARC Brunswick line, easy access to I-270, and plenty of free parking provided by Choice Hotels.

Right now, our associates in corporate headquarters are working in a hybrid environment, up to 4 days per week in the office and virtually from your home office the remaining days. We provide flexibility and encourage ongoing communication with your leadership to establish expectations about your unique needs.
