Job Title: Assistant Principal

Reports to: Building Principal

Supervisory Responsibilities: Personnel as assigned by building principal.Position Purpose: To assist the building principal in all facets of the management, leadership and administration of a school building.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Principal in the overall administration of the school.

  • Serve as Principal in his/her absence.

  • Assist the Principal in the supervision of instruction and the implementation of educational programs.

  • Assume responsibility for the behavior, discipline, and attendance of students.

  • Assume responsibility for the hiring and evaluation of classified staff.

  • Assist the Principal to evaluate the performance of certified staff.

  • Secure substitute staff members according to district procedures.

  • Assist in the preparation of schedules and assignments for staff and students.

  • Coordinate special activities, field trips, programs, and building utilization.

  • Assists the Principal in developing and maintaining the students’ and teachers’ handbooks.

  • Maintains effective relations with parents and community groups; interprets the goals, objectives, and programs of the school to parents and the community.

  • Serve as an administrative representative during IEP and 504 meetings.

  • Assists in the facilitation of various building leadership teams.

  • Assist in the development and delivery of professional learning activities for staff.

  • Serve parent, faculty and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.

  • Participate in principal and/or administrative meetings as requested.

  • Maintain a current knowledge of developments and practices in educational leadership.

  • Performs other duties as may from time to time be assigned by the Superintendent or Principal.

Qualifications Profile:

  • Possess a valid Iowa administrator license with Evaluator Approval (New) and one of the following administrative endorsements: PK-12 principal endorsement (required)

  • Understand current research as it relates to the secondary level learner and implementation of professional learning communities and multi-tiered systems of support (required)

  • Knowledge of and experience with The Leader in Me (preferred)

  • Ability to lead change, manage transitions, and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Demonstrated ability in developing professional relationships

  • Possess strong command of written and oral language

Physical Requirements: Physical requirements vary by individual job assignment but require a minimum of the following physical requirements: Walking, standing, bending, carrying, climbing, lifting minimum of 20 pounds, driving, pushing, pulling, reaching, sitting, and stooping.

Working Conditions: Varied

Terms of Employment: 260 day contract; salary and benefits to be determined by the Board of Directors

Evaluator: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of Board Policy on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel.
