U.S. Marine Corps RECREATION SPECIALIST (LEAD) STABLES HERD KEEPER/ EQUESTRIAN TRAINER (NF-3) in Oceanside, California

Summary Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) is looking for the best and brightest to join our Team! Responsibilities Herd Keeper and Lead Equestrian Trainer will oversee all activities involving the Government horses, including nutrition and feeding, stall safety, educating staff, volunteers and clients regarding equine care and management. Will lead by example, participate in the work activities, and maintain communications with management at all times. Advises on the procurement of equipment required for an equine or horse rider training program and assists in routine checks of equipment (saddles, bridles, helmets, and vests) for safety hazards to both student and animal. Responsible for coordinating lessons, trail rides, camps clinics and events. Ensures proper scheduling and coordination of programs with the Stables manager. Responsible for advising and assisting in the upkeep of the riding arena, pastures, and barn to ensure a safe environment for horses. Works closely with the Veterinarian, Ferrier and contracted support for care of the herd. Identifies mission requirements and directs utilization of the herd to meet those requirements based on individual attributes of each horse. Schedules specific horses based on individual qualities, abilities, and temperaments for specific duties then assigns horses for weekly rotations. Develops and maintains the work and rest schedule for the government horses. Tracks horse profiles and limited duty restrictions in conjunction with veterinary personnel recommendations to determine best utilization of horses. Maintain appropriate de-worming and vaccination schedule for all horses annually. Oversee and ensure proper shoeing, trimming and other hoof care for all horses as needed monthly. Oversee and ensure annual dentistry needs of all horses. May train/lead other equestrian trainers in various lessons programs. Maintains attendance and appropriate accounting records. Ensure all safety measures are observed. Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Requirements Conditions of Employment See Duties and Qualifications EVALUATIONS: Qualifications Must have two years¿ experience in Customer Service and one year Equestrian experience. Prior experience working with students, teaching lessons, guiding trail rides, etc. is preferred. Certificate or degree in an equestrian-related program from an accredited vocation, college or university preferred or equivalent hands-on experience with a certified equestrian program. Skill to demonstrate activities and use of related facility equipment. Skill to learn applicable MCCS policies and procedures. This is a mixed position where the incumbent must be able to lift and carry objects up to 45lbs independently and objects over 45lbs with assistance. Must be able to obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries and State Criminal History Repository Check (CNACI) background checks which are required for positions that involve working with children under 18 years of age.
