Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: The Osawatomie State Hospital is currently seeking PRN MHDDT\'s to provide care for our patients. This is a PRN position which allows working 999 hours within one year. You will care for patients by encouraging them to follow treatment goals and care with ADLs.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Direct Patient Care: Provide basic care to patients to enable them to meet their daily living needs, i.e.: assist with personal and oral hygiene, care of clothing, room care and special incontinent patients. Encourage proper nutrition and other assistance as needed through observation and documentation of patient outcomes in the Patient Care System. Provide notification of any problems or refusal of any of the above to the Registered Nurse. Perform basic tasks to enable assessment of patient\'s condition. Utilize observational skills per training for any signs and symptoms of medical problems.

Participate in patient activities while encouraging active patient involvement in both treatment and ward activities through regular, direct involvement (observing and escorting). It may be necessary to drive or walk patients to scheduled meals, appointments, etc. both on and off grounds, including escorting the patient for laboratory procedures, explaining the procedure, encouraging cooperation and reporting outcomes/refusals to the Registered Nurse. Responsible for implementing the admission process of newly admitted patients by developing trust and rapport, familiarizing the patient with the ward environment, introducing other staff and patients, explaining the ward/program rules and regulations, assisting with patient\'s personal belongings and completing personal property inventory.

Attempts are made to use the least restrictive interventions, however, if necessary and under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the employee may restrain and/or seclude patients in order to prevent patient injury or harm to others. This process requires knowledge of current certification and adherence to accepted restraining techniques, policies and procedures, physical strength to restrain patients, ability to act quickly and in a calm and therapeutic manner and capability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to remain flexible to patient needs and focused under pressure of numerous unit demands.

Environment / Safety: Demonstrate knowledge of handling crisis/emergency situations to ensure patient/staff safety including initiation and follow through with DR. HEART\'s, CODE II and other emergency preparedness procedures in accordance with skill level. Make rounds and conduct special patient safety checks through regular 15-minute observations of all patients\' physical and psychological status. Exhibit good work habits to assure adequate and safe staffing coverage by being punctual, attending work when scheduled and accepting assignments as needed. Perform environmental cleaning tasks to maintain a clean, safe and comfortable environment by following Agency policies and procedures. Distribute linens appropriately to maintain a clean, safe and comforta le environment by following Agency policies and procedures. Promote infection control standards by utilizing Standard Precautions to protect self from all bodily fluid exposure. Promote a positive self-image and serve as a role model for patients by being personally neat, clean and well-groomed; adhering to established hospital/nursing dress code. Accomplish all aspects of assigned duties to ensure quality patient care and safety by completing delegated tasks in a timely, willing and positive manner. Utilize on-duty time appropriately, exhibiting dependability and responsibility in fulfilling job duty obligations. Demonstrate organized work habits to maintain unit environmental safety aspects.

Documentation: Document information in the Medical Record (Patient Care System) to meet existing standards. This is done to alert the next shift regarding patients on precautions by documenting significant incidents and changes in patient behavior, attitude, appetite, physical problems, etc.; provide input into treatment planning by recognizing patient progress or regression and track movement off grounds and in the hospital. Documents pertinent information in the Patient Care System, in Progress Notes, etc., to meet standards. Documentation provides communication with regard to patients\' Treatment Plan, progress toward discharge, special checks, behavioral/physical observations, etc. Provides such documentation/communication accurately and in a timely manner.
