The Work You Will Do:

This is a full-time 40 hour a week Other Personnel Services (OPS) position within the Petroleum Storage Tanks section of the Compliance Assurance program for the Northwest District. The job requires skills in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions and a general understanding of scientific principles.

Where you will work:

The Northwest District is located along the Gulf Coast, we proudly serve 16 counties in the Florida panhandle including Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton and Washington. with three office locations in Pensacola, Panama City and Tallahassee. This position is expected to be filled in the Pensacola main office located in Escambia County at 160 West Government Street, Pensacola, FL., 32502.

Position Specifics

Your Specific Responsibilities:

The incumbent(s) will support, conduct and/or document compliance activities as assigned, including but not limited to:

  • Assisting and advising owners/operators with compliance issues as appropriate.

  • Accurate and timely entry of required data and system information into agency databases and Oculus.

  • Recommending compliance and enforcement actions as appropriate.

  • Drafting basic compliance and enforcement documents such as Compliance Assistance Letters, Warning Letters and Model Documents.

  • Providing outreach and compliance assistance to owners/operators as needed.

  • Conducting site inspections for compliance and conditions of issued permits.

Data Entry

  • Performs and coordinates accurate data entry into the appropriate Department computer databases and ensures timely entry of documents in Oculus.

Training and Safety

  • Gains the essential skills needed to determine the compliance status of regulated sites/facilities and to become knowledgeable within assigned program areas.

  • Understand the basics of rules, exemptions, permits and permit conditions and their applicability within assigned program areas.

  • Participate in safety events, job shadowing with peer inspectors and subject matter experts, on the job training, and team building initiatives as directed by management.

  • Responsible for proper use and care of state-owned property.

  • Attends workshops and training, as required.

  • Performs related work as required by supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to serve the public, DEP’s stakeholders and each other in a courteous and timely manner.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to maintain effective and productive working relationships with others.

  • Skill in dealing with conflicts, confrontations, and disagreements in a positive manner.

  • Ability to effectively prepare, prioritize, and organize work, meetings, and projects to meet deadlines and quality expectations.

  • Skill and proficiency in computer operations and programs such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, SharePoint and Outlook.

  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.

  • Ability to understand and apply applicable State and Federal rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to environmental programs.

  • Skill in collecting, evaluating, analyzing and interpreting scientific or technical data.

  • Ability to conduct field inspections/investigations that may involve working outdoors for extended periods of time in temperatures and weather conditions typical of Florida and navigating areas with rough terrain.

  • Knowledge of field sampling techniques for soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediment.

Required Qualifications:

Associate of Science or higher in engineering or one of the natural sciences or currently enrolled in an undergraduate engineering or science program at the junior level or higher or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of 2 years.

Other Job-Related Requirements for this position:

  • A valid driver's license.

  • Ability to travel, some overnight.
