University of Pittsburgh Laboratory Technician in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Laboratory Technician

The lab technician will have an essential role in the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS), a longitudinal cohort study of HIV-infected men and men at risk of HIV infection. Principal duties include specimen processing, shipping, data entry, and freezer monitoring/maintenance.

The lab technician will work closely with lab technician to complete daily blood, urine, and saliva processing at the PMS lab for the MWCCS study. This includes printing sample labels, affixing them to cryotubes prior to sample collection, and picking up samples from PMS clinic. On arrival at the lab, blood, urine, and saliva samples must be centrifuged immediately and aliquoted based on their respective additives/sample type and transferred to a -80C freezer. Cells must be separated, counted, quality controlled, frozen in a control rate freezer, and transferred to an LN2 freezer. Samples must be stored in the appropriate box for either local storage or for shipping to the national repository.

The lab technician will be responsible for ensuring over 40 freezers (-80C and LN2) in local biospecimen repository are functioning at proper limits, changing and moving LN2 tanks on a dolly as needed, and determining how many tanks are needed per week to keep LN2 freezers operational. The person will record any breakdowns, move samples into backup freezers, and contact freezer technicians when they are required. Freezers are also monitored by a remote system, Rees. Because of the temperature requirements of the samples and the unpredictability of freezer malfunctions, [temp position] is expected to respond alarms at any time of day. Job

Requirements: LN2 tanks weigh roughly 450lbs. Thus, this position requires the ability to maneuver this weight on a dolly.
