Statement of Job:

The University of Southern Maine’s Department of Athletics (https://usm.maine.edu/athletics) is seeking an Assistant Director of Athletics and Recreation. The Assistant Director will assist the Director of Athletics and the Associate Director of Athletics in the overall organization and administration of the intercollegiate athletics program, the management of the ice arena (including scheduling ice time and meeting revenue goals), as well as oversee campus recreation including club sports and intramural sports. Athletics is an important and exciting part of student life at USM, which sponsors 23 NCAA Division III intercollegiate teams and nearly 500 student-athletes who routinely compete at the regional and national level. As an NCAA Division III member institution, Huskies’ athletics places the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students’ academic programs.

The Assistant Director of Athletics will administer a comprehensive recreation program that engages a diverse student population, promotes health and wellness, and enhances the quality of living and learning for students; this will include directly supervising the Coordinator of Recreation. The Assistant Director works with fitness center management and staff to maximize engagement in fitness memberships and programs, and serves as the Ice Arena Manager and is responsible for overall management of the ice arena including scheduling and meeting revenue goals and developing additional revenue strategies for the department. Additionally, the Assistant Director leads the coordination of summer sports camps and clinics, assists with game and event management, and may be responsible for individual coach supervision.

This is a full-time, 12-month position with an annual salary of $70,000 and is primarily located on the USM Gorham campus. Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree related to athletics administration, recreation management, sports management, educational leadership or teaching/coaching.

  • 3+ years of experience in athletics administration, recreation management, or related field.

  • Proven leadership ability and administrative competency.

  • Documented experience working with students and/or student-athletes.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • A strong work ethic and willingness to work nights and weekends as needed.

  • A commitment to Title IX, Gender Equity and the fair and equitable treatment of all student-athletes and others.

Preferred:

  • Playing experience at the high school or college level.
