The Materials and Process Engineering Department is looking for a Materials Engineer to join our team in Portsmouth, RI. A qualified candidate will have a background and experience in materials science, mechanical engineering, polymer science, and/or chemistry. This position will offer a qualified candidate the opportunity to support material selections during design, development, and manufacturing of hardware, and perform materials evaluation and testing in support of program design, development, and failure analysis activities associated with a wide range of product applications. The role will involve evaluation of a variety of materials (such as adhesives, encapsulants, primers, and metals) and validation and verification of chemicals and materials used on product meet design and program requirements. Tasks will require critical thinking to solve challenging problems and careful attention to detail on procedures, testing of materials, and documentation of results. Collaboration with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, subject matter experts, and suppliers is required. Candidate must be able to manage and coordinate a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements. This candidate will become part of a multi-disciplined team.

What You Will Do

  • Evaluation of materials based on conformance to specifications and performance requirements for Undersea and Navy applications

  • Working closely with design personnel in the selection, review, and approval of materials and finishes in new and updated designs

  • Developing and/or validating appropriate materials, material properties, and processes for use on existing and new products

  • Providing resolution to technical, operational, and supplier problems related to materials and processes

  • Participate in analysis and documentation of alternate materials and participate in obsolescence investigations

  • Conducting hands on material testing using a variety of laboratory techniques

  • Following standard written protocols, as well as developing and fabricating unique test plans and test setups

  • Reviewing material documentation and assessment of specifications

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Education: Degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or Polymer Science.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in materials science, mechanical engineering, polymer science, or chemistry, or hold a Master’s Degree in the aforementioned disciplines.

  • Experience performing material testing and/or understanding of instrumental analysis.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Experience with Instrumental Analysis and laboratory techniques

  • Experience working on programs or projects associated with Undersea or Navy applications

  • Experience working with design and development, manufacturing and/or suppliers in materials engineering related design, development, and/or manufacturing projects.

  • Understanding of material safety datasheets, military specifications, and ASTM test methods

  • ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

The salary range for this role is 64,000 USD - 128,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
