Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Design Engineer – Government Services in Pullman, Washington

As a Design Engineer, a typical day might include the following:

  • Design and engineer low- and medium-voltage AC and DC circuit breakers. 

  • Propose, estimate, plan, and execute high-quality work that meets or exceeds applicable standards, regulations, customer specifications, and requirements. 

  • Communicate and collaborate with customers using verbal discussion, written correspondence, teleconferences, technical reports, papers, presentations, and product documentation. 

  • Consult with, mentor and train other engineers and colleagues in technical disciplines. 

  • Model, teach, and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles. 

  • Protect SEL Intellectual Property by writing patent and copyright applications. 

      Required Qualifications 

    United States citizenship  B.S. or M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related or equivalent experience  5- 10+ years of work experience with the following:  -- AC and/or DC circuit breaker design and engineering  -- electric power systems practices and philosophies  -- statistical analysis and data analytic techniques  Expert experience with modeling and simulation software (Ansys, Solidworks, Matlab, Simulink, etc.)  Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities  Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment  Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills  Excellent technical training skills  Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time  Background check results satisfactory to SEL  Negative drug test result(s) 

    Preferred Qualifications 

  • Successful experience with new product development and introduction, including testing, qualification, and manufacturing 

  • Experience with military-grade environmental requirements (e.g., shock, vibration) 

  • Understanding of power utility protection, control, automation, and communication schemes 

  • Expert knowledge of power systems analysis, power system protection and power system stability 

  • Demonstrated and recognized research record 

  • Author of quality professional publications 

      Physical Requirements 

  • Sit up to 8 hours a day 

  • Vision correctable to 20/30 or better 

  • Ability to communicate via telephone 

  • Use computer keyboard device

    Pay Range Data

We anticipate filling this position as a Design Engineer $69,100 -$108,100.

We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the salary range may differ if filled at a different level. Our salary ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location. We base our starting pay offer and title on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
