Unilever Controls and Automation Lead in Rexdale, Ontario

Background & Purpose of the Job

The Control & Automation lead role is critical to the development of our factories to World Class, which means zero defects, zero waste, and zero losses. As part of the engineering team, The Control & Automation lead role will help us create automated systems in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with utmost adherence to Unilever standards . Reporting to the site engineering manager, Controls & Automation lead will work with different departments and Plant leadership team to determine existing automation capabilities as well as future automation capabilities . This role will also play a critical role in scope definition of new CAPEX projects and will also work closely with OEMs in the commissioning of new equipment.

In addition, C&A Lead will spearhead the day-to-day troubleshooting alongside site electricians and identify opportunities to improve . The incumbent will also be responsible for plant ele ctricians further training and development. This role also has responsibility for supporting electrical design, PLC/HMI programming and process instrumentation requirements for both new projects and existing systems

Who You Are & What You’ll Do

  • Assist site engineering manager in finalizing electrical and controls scope for new projects, adhering to Unilever engineering standards

  • Assists site engineering manager in creating RFQ for new projects

  • Oversees electrical and controls contractors during a project implementation

  • Plays a critical role in delivering site CAPEX and other engineering projects on time & in full

  • Works closely with project engineers and other mechanical contractors in seamless execution of the projects

  • Establishes ideal line balancing for new projects and improves line balancing for existing lines

  • Identifies and creates a time-based phasing out plan for obsolete PLC and control systems with least impact to plant operations

  • Works closely with site chief engineer to improve utility control systems

  • Assists in net zero and energy conservation initiatives

  • Assists UMS team in upgrade of site SCADA system (DFOS)

  • Design, build and program packaging and processing equipment, automated conveyors, communication networks, CIP systems and utility controls (Ammonia refrigeration, air compressors, boilers , building HVAC)

  • Set up and or adjust operating parameters in VFDs, servos and other instrumentation using Vendor software and or PLC programs

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable provincial and federal regulations

  • Creates and updates all plant electrical control schematics, PLC and HMI programs

  • Helps create th e edit log for all PLC programs

  • Lead and support additional projects and tasks as required

  • Coaches and mentors' plant electricians in their further development in PLC and process instrumentation troubleshooting skills

  • S u pport other departments and other plant initiatives as needed.

  • Continuously improve control reliability of existing and new projects

  • Works closely with site category engineer to deliver category innovation projects

  • P lays a critical supporting role in l ine modifications and Focus Improvement initiatives to ensure timely delivery of all critical actions based on current losses

  • S erve on a Safety, Health, & Environment (SHE) team as assigned.

  • Manage Industrial networks

  • Develop automation standards / standardize installation parts

  • Train technical staff in new technologies

  • Act as site liaison to IT department

  • Lead site Cyber Security

    What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in technology , Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Technical Trades License (309 or 442A) with equivalent experience

  • 5-7 years general industrial manufacturing experience , preferably in a food environment in similar capacity

  • Strong experience with Rockwell software (5/500/5000), Factory Talk View, Allen Bradley VFD (Power flex and 525 series)

  • In additions to Allen-Bradley PLC syste ms , ideal candidate should have experience with Schnieder and Siemens PLC platform

  • Strong experience with Allen-Bradley, Bosch- Rexroth and Schneider Motion controllers

  • Strong experience with automated conveyor systems and Process instrumentation, including tuning of PID controllers

  • Good knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code, C UL and CSA requirements as well as in-depth knowledge of the Regulation

  • Ability to work in a multi-functional team environment

  • Excellent personal communication skills

  • Flexibility with schedule and hours

  • Familiarity with GMP/ISO/Audits is an asset

  • Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)/World Class Manufacturing (WCM) experience is preferred; continuous improvement experience is also preferred.

  • CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) experience is preferred.

  • Demonstrated leadership, facilitation, coaching and organization skills. Strong written and oral communication skills.
