Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Multi-Omic Sample Preparation Technician in Richland, Washington

Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

Responsibilities

The Integrative Omics research group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has a Multi-Omic Sample Preparation Technician position available to support its proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics (multi-omics) sample preparation needs. The Integrative Omics group develops and applies diverse protein/peptide and small molecule extraction techniques for mass spectrometry-based omics technologies in studies of health and disease, the environment, and general systems biology. Particular strengths desired are applications involving multi-omic extractions with challenging biological and environmental samples, temperature protein profiling, and high-throughput processing of very large numbers of biological samples for multi-omics analyses.

We are seeking a versatile individual who is motivated, a self-starter and can work in a highly dynamic team-based environment. The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills to assist in the Multi-Omics Sample Preparation team by performing various scientific tasks. These tasks include all aspects of proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics sample preparation, biological sample and chemical waste management, and interfacing with other project team members, including principal investigators. Experience with methods development of new sample preparation methods is a plus.

The position requires a highly responsible individual with extreme attention to detail that will be able to function independently with limited supervision and effectively manage conflicting priorities and develop solutions to problems.

Maintenance and organization of working environment and an accurate laboratory notebook are expected in addition to implementation of Environmental Safety and Health Operations and security requirements, as well as directorate and group policies.

The candidate will conduct research and development activities including standard technical procedures that range from routine to specialized, under technical supervision. Will also operate in laboratory workspaces equipped with fume hoods, glove boxes and with specialized instrumentation in order to conduct research.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED and 6 years of relevant experience -OR-

  • Technical Institute Graduate (TIG)/relevant AA degree or higher and 4 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Science or related field

  • Critical thinking skills, attention to detail, and good communication (oral and written) skills

  • Must be able to demonstrate proficient use of personal computer systems and routine office software

  • Additional skills of interest include experience in one or more of the following areas: biochemistry, protein extraction, metabolite/lipid extraction, cell culture, proteomics, metabolomics, or lipidomics, and/or microbiology
