Rochester Presbyterian Home Staff Development Director - Assisted Living Memory Care in Rochester, New York
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Staff Development Director is responsible for overseeing the professional growth and training of employees within RPH. This role includes developing and implementing training programs, workshops, and resources to enhance employee skills, foster career development, and improve overall job performance.
The role of a Director of Staff Development is critical to maintaining a high standard of care and ensuring the well-being of residents in RPH memory care communities. The director works closely with RPH leaders to identify skill gaps, assess training needs, and ensure that all development programs align with the organization's goals and objectives.
Additionally, the Staff Development Director often leads initiatives to improve employee retention, engagement, and morale by providing continuous learning opportunities and fostering a culture of growth and development.
Key responsibilities include:
Designing, implementing, and managing employee training and development programs.
Assessing organizational training needs and identifying skill gaps.
Collaborating with leadership to align development initiatives with business goals.
Tracking and evaluating the effectiveness of training programs.
Leading employee mentorship or coaching programs.
Managing budgets for training and development initiatives.
Staying up to date on trends and best practices in employee development and organizational learning.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Staff Training and Development:
Responsible for the new employee orientation and ongoing education of all staff, both for department-specific and facility-wide education.
Develop, implement, and maintain training programs focused on memory care best practices, including communication techniques, behavioral management, and activities for residents.
Develops, implements and maintains training programs encompassing The Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care.
Participates in curriculum development and selects appropriate teaching strategies.
Maintains established educational models reflecting the mission, vision, and values of Rochester Presbyterian Home.
Plans, publishes and conducts monthly In-service calendar for RPH Communities; and conducts regular in-service training sessions and workshops for caregivers, nurses, and other staff members.
Provides ongoing coaching and support to staff, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to effectively care for residents with dementia or memory impairments.
Supervises classroom and clinical activities of Licensed Nurses, Medication Technicians, Care Partners and Shahbaz.
Oversees and coordinates the approved EALR skills and Medication Technician training programs as required by NYS DOH.
Oversees, facilitates and coordinates the RPH new employee orientation to policies and procedures and required annual mandatory trainings for all new employees.
Plans, coordinates and conducts an effective on-going in-service plan for all employees that includes training, and proficiency evaluations and skills checks required for Care Partners to remain compliant with NYS Regulations.
Plans, coordinates and conducts annual in-services for all facility employees in accordance with State and Federal regulations and Company policy.
In collaboration with Human Resources, maintains orientation and in-service records for all employees in current, neat and orderly fashion.
Assists the Administrator and the RN Case Manager in ensuring that all nursing procedures and policies are reinforced.
Resident Care Support:
Work closely with direct care staff to ensure the proper application of memory care principles in daily activities.
Offer guidance on person-centered care plans.
Act as a resource for staff and provide guidance on addressing challenging behaviors and situations related to dementia and memory loss.
Quality Improvement:
Actively Participates in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement projects according to the facility QAPI plan.
Help evaluate and assess the facility's memory care programs and suggest improvements.
Meets with personnel as appropriate to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas and/or improvement of services.
Stay up-to-date with the latest research and advancements in memory care to ensure the facility's practices are evidence-based and innovative.
Participates in the investigation of employee accidents and promotes prevention of similar occurrences through appropriate recommendation and/ or interventions.
Compliance and Documentation:
Ensure that memory care practices meet all regulatory and accreditation standards.
Maintain regulatory documentation related to staff training and human resource communications.
Monitors the effectiveness/outcomes of educational programs.
Accurately interprets and assures compliance with established policies,, procedures and philosophy of care.
Collaboration:
Work collaboratively with Human Resources and RPH Administrators to ensure training programs are comprehensive and effective.
Collaborates with all departments in planning, organizing and implementing educational programs and developing educational resources;
Participates in the development, revision and communication of facility policies and procedures.
Fosters departmental and interdisciplinary team building. Promotes team morale and productivity.
Responds to all staff, family members, and residents in a courteous, patient and caring manner;
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Social Work, Gerontology, Education or a related human resources field. OR 10 + years of relevant leadership experience in assisted living and memory care.
Experience: Previous experience in memory care or dementia care, including experience in an educational or training role.
Certifications: Specialized certifications in memory care or dementia care (e.g., Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) or similar) preferred. OR ability to achieve certification within 1 year of employment at RPH.
Skills: Excellent communication, training, and organizational skills. Strong leadership abilities, project management experience, and expertise in instructional design or learning methodologies .
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to move about the facility and assist with resident care as needed.
Ability to lift and assist residents if required in certain situations.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Memory care assisted living environment focused on providing care for those with Alzheimer’s and other memory-related conditions.
Primarily office-based, with direct interaction with residents in the ALR/SNALR/EALR.
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet staff training and skills observations.
May involve some physical activity (e.g., assisting residents or setting up activities).

The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Specific vision abilities required by this job may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
