Position Summary Information
Summary
Responsible for general facility sanitation, cleaning animal caging/pens, equipment operation and maintenance, limited animal husbandry and occasional basic veterinary medical treatment and record-keeping under supervision.
Principal Functional Responsibilities
Equipment Operating and Maintenance: Operates mechanical equipment to process cages, accessories and waste, such as mechanical washers, incinerator, autoclaves, waste management systems and bedding dispensers. Performs routine maintenance on area equipment according to such as replacing/cleaning filters, cleaning nozzles, greasing wheel, and filling oil. Maintains record on the maintenance and performs Quality Control to assure the machines are working properly and sanitation is achieved. Monitors proper function of mechanical equipment used in assigned area and performs preliminary trouble shooting when equipment malfunctions. Performs general sanitation and maintenance work in the animal facility (i.e. mop hallways, take trash to dumpster, soiled mops and carpets to dock, etc.)
Animal Care and Husbandry: Performs limited animal husbandry, monitoring animal well-being and occasionally basic veterinary medical treatment(s). Monitors supplies.
Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• High School diploma or equivalent
• Expected to successfully pass the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification exam at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level (or equivalent as approved by the CMU Director) within 18 months of hire date.
• Must enjoy working with animals and tolerate animal-related odors
Preferred Qualifications
• Coursework in animal care and use
• Six months of general sanitation and/or equipment maintenance, and animal care experience
Physical Requirements
Must be able to utilize a phone, computer and other office equipment. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and handle a broad variety of research animals. Must be able to work rotating weekends and holiday shifts.

Starting Pay Rate Range: $11.95 -- $13.33
