Job Summary

University of Utah Department of Dermatology is seeking a full-time Histology Technician to join our Dermatology Laboratory Services team, assigned to the Dermatopathology and/or Mohs Laboratories.

Responsibilities

All training for this position is provided on-site; no prior technical education is required.

Essential Functions

Dermatopathology Laboratory

  1. Evaluates all labeling for accuracy and completeness to ensure correct data is entered into the LIS .

  2. Observes and describes tissue.

  3. Documents description of tissue via dictation into LIS .

  4. Sections, inks, and places tissue into cassettes for overnight processing.

  5. Places cassettes into processors and initiates automatic program run.

  6. Adheres to all HIPAA guidelines and respects patient confidentiality.

  7. Adheres to all laboratory safety protocols including wearing PPE as necessary.

  8. Maintains excellent productivity standards and adheres by the University PROMISE standards.

  9. Maintains laboratory work area by performing preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment as well as keeping work area clean and orderly.

  10. Provides additional general laboratory support where needed, i.e., CAP / CLIA inspection preparation.

Mohs Laboratories

  1. Receives fresh tissue from surgical staff.

  2. Evaluates all labeling for accuracy and completeness to ensure correct data is entered.

  3. Embeds and sections tissue to place on slides.

  4. Completes appropriate histological stains on slides.

  5. Adheres to all HIPAA guidelines and respects patient confidentiality.

  6. Adheres to all laboratory safety protocols including wearing PPE as necessary.

  7. Maintains excellent productivity standards and adheres by the University PROMISE standards.

  8. Maintains laboratory work area by performing preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment as well as keeping work area clean and orderly.

  9. Provides additional general laboratory support where needed, i.e., CAP / CLIA inspection preparation.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Often: Infectious disease, oils ( there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids ), exposure to animals, hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals) .

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in a biological science or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

American Society of Clinical Pathologist ( ASCP ) certification as a Histology Technician is preferred.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
