Job Summary

Community engagement programs within the Office of Undergraduate Studies promote academic pathways to post-secondary education for youth and adults. The University of Utah has aimed to support strategic equity initiatives by collaborating closely with community partners in Salt Lake City’s Westside neighborhoods.

The Glendale-Mt.View Community Learning Center ( CLC ) is located in the Glendale neighborhood and supports over 1,500 pre-college students, their families, and the local community. In addition to operating as a learning space for both Glendale Middle School and Mt. View Elementary School, the CLC and hosts various programming opportunities centered around family engagement, youth development, health services, after-school learning, pre-college and career preparation, and adult education.

The Volunteer Management Assistant is a community-based work study position that will provide support for approximately 50 university student volunteers per semester. These students, enrolled in courses that emphasize inclusive education, are expected to fulfill 10 – 14 hours of volunteer service in educational environments each semester. Volunteers are placed at Mt. View Elementary School, Glendale Middle School, The Learning Lab at the CLC , Glendale Public Library, and Hartland Partnership Center.

This position will be based at the Glendale Community Learning Center (1388 Navajo St, Salt Lake City, UT 84104). The student who fills this position must be eligible for work study.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment where volunteers feel valued and engaged.

  • Act as a liaison between volunteers and staff, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.

  • Work with the program manager to create onboarding structure for university student volunteers, which includes training on timesheet completion and coordinating and ensuring the completion of necessary safety trainings for volunteers, among other items.

  • Attend meetings with representatives from the school district, university, and partner locations.

  • Work with the program manager to develop a volunteer scheduling grid.

  • Work with the program manager to match UU volunteers with partner areas of need to ensure volunteers are adequately placed in the appropriate classroom designations.

  • Conduct regular check-ins with both volunteers and relevant instructors, including administering surveys to understand successes and areas for improvement.

  • Track and analyze volunteer data, including hours contributed and program impact.

  • Prepare reports and recommendations to enhance the volunteer program and align it with organizational goals.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions and take appropriate action, and resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other staff, students, and the public.

Preferences

  • Computer skills including word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software experience.

  • Leadership or volunteer management experience preferred.
