This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service Examination process for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years.

Under general supervision, the 7318 Electronic Maintenance Technician performs electronic work of varying complexity in all areas of the Airport.

The essential functions of the position include: 

  • Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshoots problems with closed circuit television equipment, with electronic and electromechanical equipment used in security systems, public address systems and fire alarms, and with digital electronic equipment.

  • Performs design and assembly work on digital electronic and electromechanical equipment using specialized test equipment.

  • Programs databases. Configure and integrate new equipment to the existing system.

  • Specifies parts and equipment needed to maintain and repair equipment.

  • Operates a variety of test equipment, computers, power tools and other specialized equipment.

  • Assists engineering staff and craft workers in developing specifications for new equipment, and for the replacement/upgrade of existing equipment.

Nature of work:

Incumbents are required to work with potentially hazardous equipment and materials including high voltages, chemicals and batteries, and to lift heavy weights.  May be required to work in confined spaces or dark and damp locations where Uninterruptible Power Supplies (U.P.S’s), variable frequency drives (V.F.D’s) and other equipment is located.  Incumbents may also be required to work on ladders and lifts for long periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Completion of a two (2) year or equivalent program in electronics from a recognized academic, trade or technical institution; or completion of a military training program in electronics

AND

  1. Three (3) years of verifiable journey-level industrial or institutional electronic experience performing installation, instrumentation calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and modification of electronic systems and related electrical components and electronic sub-systems to the electronic component level;

AND

  1. Possession of a valid California driver’s license

Desirable Qualifications:

The stated  desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • At least two (2) years’ experience working with electronic systems tied to servers and networks.

  • At least three (3) years of journey-level experience in programming, commissioning, testing and troubleshooting enterprise-level installations of Access Control, Fire Alarm, and/or CCTV systems.

  • Work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment

  • Work well with others and, at time, independently

  • Proactive, solution oriented, self-reliant

  • Good oral communication skills

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Selection Procedure: 

After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): Candidates will be required to complete a MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements.  Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview.  Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates.  If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:

Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening.  Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination.  Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

Customs Clearance:

This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area.  An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced.  Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal.  Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination.  Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Customs Access Seal requirements and procedures are located in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 19, Part 122, Sections 181 or 189.

Medical Examination:

Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine his/her ability to perform the essential functions of the job and/or the ability to meet the physical minimum requirements.
