The University of Washington Department of Intercollegiate Athletics seeks a Director of Athletic Bands (the Director) to oversee its comprehensive athletic band program. The position is a professional appointment within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (the Department).

The position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or permanent residence sponsorship.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The position involves the supervision of the 240-member Husky Marching Band (the Band), the Purple & Gold Basketball Bands, the Husky Volleyball Band, as well as support of other teams and events within the athletic department throughout the academic year based on a schedule determined by the Department in coordination with the Director. The successful candidate will also oversee the coordination of all travel arrangements for athletic bands and supervise the issuance of music, uniforms, and maintenance of instrument inventory. Arrange and coordinate other special events as needed including university and civic-related performances.

The Director is responsible for supervising a full-time Coordinator of Band and Spirit Operations, two doctoral level Teaching Assistants, a part-time drumline instructor, a part-time media team, as well as other part-time and volunteer staff. The successful candidate will also work closely with the Husky Marching Band Alumni Association as well as the Husky Band Foundation.

The Director will be expected to continue to cultivate a positive working relationship and collaborate with colleagues in the School of Music and UW Alumni Association.

Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Conference, the State of Washington, and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs and other required trainings offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Responsibilities by Percentage

  • Student Mentorship (10%) - Cultivate an environment where students can flourish. Provide mentorship and structure that promotes responsible decision making by band members and staff.

  • Administrative Duties (10%) - Manage the budget for the athletic bands, manage the equipment inventory for the band, facilitate travel for band events and athletic competitions. Hire, supervise and manage support staff and volunteers.

  • Vision, Alignment, Execution (25%) - Develop a vision and strategic priorities for the athletic bands that align with the UW department of athletics priorities and values. Create engaging musical arrangements and drill designs that enhance the fan gameday experience at athletic competitions and various university events.

  • Rehearsals & Performances (45%) - Conduct rehearsals and coordinate performances at athletic and various university events. Ensure a high standard of musicianship and performance.

  • External Stakeholders (10%) - Foster relationships and effectively communicate with band alumni, donors, and external stakeholders. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree required, and a minimum of three years of experience working with a comprehensive collegiate athletic band program. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as a Director of Marching Bands and master’s degree in music or related discipline preferred.
