The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) at the UW School of Dentistry specializes in the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and management of diseases associated with the face and jaws such as trauma, infections, disorders, and cancer associated with the face and neck. Our clinics work closely with residents acquiring their OMS certification and the school’s General Practice program, giving residents unique learning experiences like extractions, implant placements, and dental anesthesia and sedation in a clinic setting. Our clinic, Northwest Center for Oral and Facial Surgery, is located at 6222 NE 74th St, Building 25, within Warren G. Magnuson Park. POSITION PURPOSE
Under the direction of the clinic’s Registered Nurse 3 and Department Administrative Director, the part-time (40%) Registered Nurse 2 (RN2) will provide care and coordination of patient services through the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of safe, therapeutic care in the clinics associated with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS). The candidate must have strong IV skills and excellent multi-tasking abilities appropriate for a fast-paced clinic. This position will be tasked with ensuring the health and safety of OMS patients throughout the clinic space and assist with enhancing the overall effectiveness of faculty, residents, dental students, staff, operations, and administration. RN2 is a team player and problem solver with a commitment to providing patient-centered, high quality care. The part-time RN2 will be an active contributor in strategy meetings with the department leadership, the School of Dentistry Dean’s office, interdepartmental groups, facilities, vendors, and external entities that have associations with OMS.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES In the OMS department, the part-time RN2 has a variety of duties.

  • Prepares medications for procedures.

  • Assists in admitting patients to the operatory suite.

  • Administers conscious sedation i.e. Demerol, versed, fentanyl IV push and monitors patients receiving propofol.

  • Provides pre- and post-procedural care for sedation patients, including vital sign monitoring, assessment of cognitive skills, and alerting attending staff of complications.

  • Assumes responsibility for complete documentation of patient records regarding the administration of sedation and documents patient information in the EHR.

  • Provides post-op instructions and follow up for the patients.

  • Assesses the side effects of treatment and identifie.

  • Counts and stores all conscious sedation medications, is accountable for all controlled substances used for conscious sedation.

  • Is responsible for making sure equipment is available and functioning when needed, ensuring safety and adequate supply by carefully inspecting equipment fully at the beginning of each day.

  • Collaborates with team members to assure continuity of patient care and to meet patient care needs.

  • Helps train new nurses or staff members if required.

  • May perform other related duties. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing AND one year of professional nursing experience. OR Equivalent education/experience CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT While this position will work an established schedule, flexibility to adjust to clinic priorities may adjust weekly work hours.
