Amazon Software Development Engineer, Experience Generator in Seattle, Washington

We are looking for a Software Development Engineer to lead development of Amazon’s Experience Generator service, a central runtime that handles Amazon’s most important shopping workloads. You will use your deep technical expertise, excellent leadership skills, and ability to hit the ground running to solve complex problems. You will build and interface with services that scale to millions of requests and deployed globally. You will have the opportunity to partner with other teams while diving deep into distributed systems that serve hundreds of thousands of transactions per second.
As an SDE in the team, you will get to collaborate with multiple Principal Engineers and Senior Engineers across a large cross-section of Retail Foundation technical stack, to propose and drive cross-system designs and implementations. This role provides you with autonomy and ownership on decisions, working backwards directly from customers. There is ample of opportunity for growth due to the high visibility work, and presence of senior engineering talent for guidance and mentorship. You will leverage technical skills like distributed systems, end-to-end system design with resiliency, and core Java development skills.

You take ownership of investigating and solving problems, and don’t wait for permission. You lead with empathy while doing so.
You are comfortable discussing and delivering on deep technical details with senior engineers across partner teams, collaborating with them to solve challenging problems.
You can think strategically, identifying areas of long-term technical investment spanning a year or more.
You can lead engineers to investigate design approaches, prototype technology and evaluate technical feasibility.
You establish architectural principles, select design patterns, and mentor team members on their appropriate application.
Operate a largescale container-based workload to deliver with operational excellence while meeting/exceeding system SLAs (e.g. Availability, Latency)
You communicate effectively two levels up from your manager, with local and remote teams, verbally and in writing.
A day in the life
This is a wide-ranging role that involves partnering closely with other technical leaders, engaging with internal customers (e.g., Store Builders), and influencing program leaders. It requires leading execution and delivery by a specialized team that is at the center of Amazon’s next-generation architecture. One day you may be driving a long term capability strategy document, and another you may be leading delivery for a complex delivery, or improving the performance of an existing service. Next, you may be plugged into an important operational issue that is impacting the health of the Store, influencing your team to make the best decision for the customer in the moment.

Basic Qualifications
3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
Experience programming with at least one software programming language
Preferred Qualifications
3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $115,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
