Amazon Software Development Engineer III, Digital Payments and Emerging Markets in Seattle, Washington

The Amazon Digital and Emerging Payments Team’s vision is to delight our customers with the best payment experience in the world! To achieve this vision, we are in search of a talented Software Developer who is customer obsessed and is focused on delivering first class quality products to our customers.

Our team takes a world view of payments for all of Amazon and builds highly customized and seamless payment experiences for our global customers. This focuses on geography and customer requires working on different technologies such as Android, Amazon Fire, and back-end platform systems in order to meet the needs of our customers. Our back-end systems are always available and guarantee that our customers' orders are never lost and always processed even when downstream services are down.

We are looking for a software development Engineer to play a key role in the Digital Payments & Emerging Markets (DEP) team, primarily building Amazon's Mexico Payments Products. This role offers exciting challenges and the opportunity to influence and drive a growing payments area.

We’re looking for an engineer with expertise in designing, developing, and maintaining software. This role will be expected to help drive the software development process as well as mentor fellow team members.

Understanding the needs of our customers and continually aligning your work with your objectives will be critical. Working in ambiguity, anticipating bottlenecks and escalations, and setting realistic (yet appropriately aggressive) expectations are all crucial to the success of our products and customers.

Key job responsibilities

  • Refine ambiguous requirements and define system architecture.

  • Own technical documentation and break down work for the team to implement individual components.

  • Be responsible for technical problem solving and meeting product objectives.

  • Developing and driving adoption of engineering best practices

  • Write exemplary code in terms of code organization, clarity, simplicity, error handling, and documentation.

  • Effectively communicate with your team ( and other teams) via design reviews, code review, knowledge transfer sessions.

  • Mentor other developers.

  • Own and maintain the systems that you build.

  • Contribute to planning, design, implementation, testing, operations, and process improvement as member of a Scrum team.

  • Maintain balance between team's delivery speed and building for the future

As an SDE working in the International Technology team, you'll be able to build and deliver solutions for real world problems on a global scale, own the systems end to end and influence the direction of our technology that impacts millions customers around the in globe.

You challenge yourself and others to constantly come up with better solutions. This highly visible role requires frequent communication with senior leadership in order to help shape and deliver on the product roadmap, and requires you to nimbly switch between strategic and tactical initiatives to achieve technical, business, and customer experience goals. You'll be given the unique opportunity to own and drive initiatives across the several marketplaces as a whole -- from algorithmic innovation, all the way down to the datasets that the back-end services consume.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 7+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience

  • 7+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team

  • Strong Computer Science fundamentals in algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis.

  • Strong problem solving and trouble shooting skills and an ability to come up with creative solutions to impossible-to-solve problems.

  • Experience developing high quality design and implementations that scale.

  • Experience with scalable distributed systems and service oriented architectures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

  • Eager to learn and learn fast, enjoy a fast paced environment.

  • Self-directed, demonstrate leadership potential and a team player.

  • A high degree of pragmatism in building the simplest thing that does the job; we want to use technology to solve real-world problems expediently, not indulge in over-designed, unnecessarily intricate software architecture.

  • Experience mentoring junior software engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers.

  • Deal well with ambiguous/undefined problems; ability to think abstractly.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $151,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $261,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
