City of Seward Seasonal Recreational Program Aide in Seward, Alaska

This position provides front-line customer service at various Parks and Recreation facilities and performs administrative and clerical tasks in support of Department activities. Required to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed to assist with activities and special events.

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. 1 year of experience in this field preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability, and skills: Facilitates recreational activities, including adult and youth programs, competitive and noncompetitive team sports, leagues, tournaments, races, fitness activities, leisure classes, skills clinics, outdoor trips, and special events. Fosters a welcoming and engaging environment for participants, modifies activities as needed based on participants' actions and feedback. Monitors and ensures the safety of participants and program staff. Cleans and maintains recreation equipment and facilities for public use. Performs administrative tasks such as filling out paperwork and answering telephones. Provides friendly customer service and works collaboratively with others to accomplish tasks. Follows safe work practices.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Department policies and procedures. The objectives of public recreation, human behavior, and mental and physical hygiene as applied to recreational activities. The use of proper safety precautions in the execution of Department programs and activities. The use of standard office equipment including computers and relevant software programs.

ABILITY TO: Follow oral and written instructions. Communicate effectively. Read, analyze, and interpret procedure manuals and sports rules books. Engage participants in programs and activities and provide direction as needed. Perform basic mathematical computations. Identify risky behaviors or other areas of concern in program participants and get assistance as needed. Maintain confidentiality. Obtain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification and First Aid certification if required. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, program participants and their parents.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, bend, talk and hear, use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, kneel, or crouch. The employee is occasionally exposed to heat, cold, wetness and humidity and noise. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
