The Engineering Technician III directly supports research and development engineering as well as manufacturing engineering, performing a variety of assembly, test and diagnostics functions to support the organization. This role needs an individual to be versatile and dynamic as the job tasks may vary frequently depending upon organizational demand and resources. Works closely with team of engineers in problem identification, containment activities, action plan creation and execution.

Essential Duties:

75%

Testing, Building, Modifying:

  • Use various electrical, electronic, and mechanical measurement devices.

  • Setup test equipment in proper sequence per testing procedures.

  • Perform circuit board, product, and system-level tests on prototypes, existing and competitor products - involving electrical, environmental, mechanical, and electromechanical functions.

  • Modify PCBAs or subassemblies to revised circuit or assembly configurations.

  • Accurately interpret and document electrical, environmental, and other measurements.

  • Investigate field failures of returned products through system-level testing and circuit board debugging.

  • Fabricate and lead assembly of test equipment and prototype products per assembly drawings, schematics, and fabrication drawings.

  • Perform basic troubleshooting.

Clerical:

  • Analyze test data and prepare formal and informal test reports.

  • Maintain test-related procedures and documentation.

  • Update and develop policies and procedures supporting the continuous improvement of the engineering lab.

Other Duties:

  • Actively participate with fellow team members in daily maintenance of lab environment and preventive maintenance of lab equipment.

  • Collaborate with engineers in planning of future test plans and requirements.

  • Recommend and implement improvements in laboratory test equipment and facilities.

  • Mentor and train developing technicians, and members of non-engineering groups within the company.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of at least a two-year accredited technician program and three years in a similar position or graduate of a four-year engineering technology program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Read and interpret electrical and electronic schematics.

  • Operate electrical and electronic test and measurement tools such as digital volt meters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, passive and electronic loads and logic analyzers.

  • Solder through-hole and fine pitch surface mount components.

  • Debug printed circuit board issues with guidance from process documentation and other members of the team.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment.

  • Coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Demonstrate self-motivation to learn new concepts.

  • Communicate effectively though written, graphical, and oral means.

  • Understand and apply electrical techniques and theories.

  • Interpret and implement one-line drawings and electrical schematics.

  • Intermediate computer skills, including comfort with Microsoft Excel and Word

  • Demonstrate understanding of quality concepts, continuous improvement, statistical techniques, and preventative/corrective actions.

LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE: Works under general supervision while performing routine, non-routine assignments, and advanced test with some technical direction from others using existing procedures to solve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee frequently is required to use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls; and talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to walk; stoop; crouch; bend and reach above shoulders. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted and up to 100 pounds with assistance, waist high, up to 10 feet away. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to differentiate colors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working in the typical conditions of a laboratory environment including seasonal variation in temperatures and occasional exposure to fumes or by-products. The employee must comply with the assigned location PPE requirements including but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, appropriate gloves, clothing and shields for required tasks.
