TRAIL MAINTENANCE WORKER

GENERAL PURPOSE

Working under the supervision of the Spanish Fork City Parks and Recreation Lead Worker the Trail Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties throughout our trail system and performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Daily maintenance of city trails and grounds including;

  • weed spraying, tree care, grounds maintenance, cleaning/trash pick up, facilities and restroom cleaning.
  • Repair and maintain fencing along trail systems.
  • Operates tractor and mower for weed mowing.
  • Operates hand and power equipment including shovel, rake, golf cart, rototiller, soil grooming equipment.
  • Maintains tools and equipment used in trail maintenance.
  • Performs simple and minor repairs to equipment and trail structures.
  • Responds to assignments from the lead worker and supervisor.
  • Occasionally perform essential functions on holidays and weekends as assigned.
  • Occasionally will perform maintenance on mountain biking trails.
  • Enforce rules and ordinances on the trail systems.
  • Provides maintenance on the paved trails throughout the City.

Must have a professional positive attitude with good communication skills. Be productive while working alone and with others. Employees are expected to deal effectively and courteously with the public.

Must abide by city policy and procedures

Applicant will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test

Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience in the maintenance of parks or similar experience including some exposure to horticulture, landscape maintenance or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities and skills listed below:
  • Knowledge of plants, trees, shrubs, insects, and diseases.
  • Knowledge of the use of chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, etc. for maintenance for trails and other areas.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance and repair procedures and techniques used in grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to safely operate various landscape maintenance and repair equipment and tools.
  • Must have transportation to and from work and speak English.
  • Must have excellent design, organizational and planning skills, and strong people skills.
  • Must be a self-motivated, open minded problem solver that adapts readily to change. This is a hands-on position.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.
  • Must be a self starter with the ability to accomplish tasks without constant supervision.

Surroundings involve contact with outdoors, dust, dirt, heat, cold, arid/dry, humidity, wetness, noise, fumes and vibrations. Requires working with and around other employees. Requires working alone. Health and Safety conditions include constantly dealing with soil, water and plant materials. Occasionally dealing with toxic materials and chemicals. Physical a ctivities include constant standing, kneeling, walking, hiking, crouching, handling, balancing, turning, pushing, pulling, reaching and carrying. Requires occasional jumping, crawling, sitting, climbing, throwing and feeling. Requires talking, hearing, and seeing. Requires ability to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance Physical dimensions include strength necessary in hands, arms, legs, and back. Requires constant eye/hand coordination with occasional foot/eye/hand coordination. Occasionally requires vision strain, rapid speed work, and extreme uscular exertion, along with finger, hand/arm, and foot/leg dexterity. Mental applications include constant memory for details and attention to many items. Occasionally requires the estimation of the size, quality, and quantity of objects, along with the speed of moving objects. Occasional discriminating thinking, rot/repetitive thinking, guided problem solving, creative problem solving, and memory for ideas, verbal and written directions.
