This position is located at MnDOT Central Office in St. Paul. This position will have the flexibility to telecommute, work a hybrid schedule, or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to complete a telework agreement. The incumbent will be expected to work in the office one day a week.

This position exists to aid in the performance of statewide cultural resources consultation, contract management, training and liaison activities related to FHWA funded (both state and local) and MnDOT funded projects and permit reviews. The individual in this position works to ensure compliance with federal and state historic preservation laws, rules, procedures, and policies that must be satisfied for transportation projects within the state of Minnesota. This work will include performing some archaeological fieldwork as well.

MnDOT does not sponsor applicants for visas or Optional Practical Exam for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Must meet the federal requirements for an archaeologist as outlined in 36 CFR 61: the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards. These include:

Must have a graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field, plus:

  • At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeological research, administration, or management;

  • At least four months of supervised field and analytical experience in general North American archaeology; and

  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.

NOTE: a professional in prehistoric archaeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources of the prehistoric period. A professional in historic archaeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources of the historic period.

In addition to meeting the federal requirements, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Two years advanced professional experience with actual field experience conducting archaeological surveys, and demonstrable experience identifying and evaluating archaeological sites (for either precontact or historic sites) for eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places along with writing reports and completing inventory forms on the results. This work could either have been as a Principal Investigator or other supervisory level within the Midwest.

AND experience must demonstrate:

  • Experience working with federal historical procedures and guidelines related to cultural resources reviews, especially Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. Knowledge of Minnesota legislation, including the Field Archaeology Act, the Historic Sites Act, and the Private Cemeteries Act.

  • Experience working with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Identification and Evaluation of Historic Properties.

  • Experience educating others on the Section 106 process, evaluations, determinations, and findings to others.

  • Experience reviewing archaeological work in order to recognize the quality of the work and to recommend appropriate levels of work to satisfy the SHPO/THPO, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and other interested parties.

  • Experience working with GIS including ArcMap, ArcPro, or ArcGIS Online systems, coordinate systems, projections, data conversion, data extraction, buffering, overlay analysis, basic queries, map making, data creation and editing.
