Job Description Summary

GE - Renewable Energy would like to recruit a Lead Designer - Transformer to work from our Stafford office in our Grid Solutions buisness.

We are looking for a Transformer Electrical or Mechanical Design Engineer with expertise in HVAC (preferably 400kV AC and beyond and/or HVDC) transformers.

Lichfield Road manufacturing facility has been originally established in 1903 and has been standing since 1960 as a part of English Electric group, delivering power transformers, that later merged GEC Alsthom and later became ALSTOM, and has been acquired by GE in 2015. Stafford is ideally suited for research and advanced manufacturing with our highly skilled staff and position at the heart of the UK's transport network. GE is proud to be the largest employer in Stafford, with around 1,700 employees across multiple sites.

The transformer facility has been renowned all over the world with its expertise in design, manufacturing, and delivery of HVAC and HVDC transformers world-wide, up to 800kV.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Preparation transformer detailed engineering design (including necessary calculations) and drawings (preferably 400kV and above, with HVDC / offshore experience), ability to carry out / review Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and specify parameters critical to quality (CTQ) and Design Failure Mode Effects and Analysis (FMEA)

  • Review of specifications, identification of clarifications/deviations and action plans, with the ability to lead them to conclusion

  • Selection and specification of components for ordering and manufacturing

  • Key Performance Indicators of on-time delivery, right first time and budget adherence

  • Leading communication/co-ordination with internal and external stakeholders (customers, suppliers, other departments such as projects, tendering, manufacturing, quality, procurement, etc).

Education and Experience:

  • Electrical or mechanical engineer or person with similar experience (in Power Transformers)

  • Experience of working on 3D, 2D tools (Inventor / equivalent, Autocad)

  • Experience of Document management system (WindChill / equivalent)

  • Transformer design knowledge (especially transformer design calculations, active part design including lead exits, insulation, windings, nesting of coils and tank design)

  • Knowledge of IEC60076. Knowledge of IEC61378, rail car (Schnable car) design and offshore DNV standards will be preferred

  • Should have worked independently on tender and project designs
