As a member of the Global Banking and Markets (GBM) Communications team, the Senior Manager, GBM Communications, will play a leading role in producing internal and external communications for Scotiabank’s GBM business. The incumbent will conceptualize, develop, implement, and measure the success of internal and external communications while ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate will be a superb writer and strong project manager, with experience writing in different voices for a range of internal and external audiences. The incumbent will also bring experience of working with the media and supporting issues management.

The main portfolios for this role include GBM media strategy, issue management, supporting speaking opportunities and conferences as identified, and leading communications for The Scotiabank Women Initiative for Global Banking and Markets.

Is this role right for you? In this role you, will:

  • Manage end-to-end process (including conceptualizing and creating the communications strategy, development and delivery of communications, and measuring success) of internal and external communications on behalf of assigned portfolios while ensuring alignment with Global Communications and all-Bank plans and priorities.

  • Assist in the development and execution of internal and external communication strategies and tactics, including positioning and key message development, stakeholder analysis, and coordination with other communications partners to advance strategic priorities and drive stakeholder engagement.

  • Support the development, execution, and measurement of the GBM media strategy. Supports the business with the management of various media issues; managing inbound media inquiries; obtaining approvals, developing and executing proactive media opportunities, conducting media monitoring and analysis; and planning, developing, and delivering effective communication strategies to support GBM while ensuring strong alignment to enterprise priorities.

  • Prepare, update, and distribute briefing notes on media issues and opportunities.

  • Work closely with partners to deliver communications for The Scotiabank Women Initiative for GBM.

  • Act as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to senior business leaders, key partners and communications leaders across the bank.

  • Support senior management and business partners by interpreting complex messages and creating targeted communications for various layers of the organization.

  • Represent GBM communications on various working teams and at periodic cross-functional status meetings.

  • Develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to further the Bank’s communications objectives.

  • Keep their finger on the pulse of current issues and events to produce relevant and timely thought leadership and commentary.

  • Support broader GBM-wide communications initiatives, such as planning documents, trackers, regular newsletters, and award applications.

  • Support a high-performance environment and supports a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates the team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.

  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/AF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in communications, journalism or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of eight (8) years working experience in a corporate communications or related industry communications experience in a complex, dynamic, knowledge-based environment.

  • Financial institution experience, along with understanding of capital markets, is an asset.

  • Fluency in French and/or Spanish is an asset.

Skill and Experience

  • Exceptional written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to create and deliver strategic internal and external communications plans that drive engagement across a large employee base and amongst a range of stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated media relations and issues management experience, with a knowledge of the Canadian media landscape.

  • Experience in seeking, creating, and championing creative communication solutions.

  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.

  • Excellent project management skills with a high-level of accountability for the quality and timely completion of projects.

  • Knowledge and experience communicating via different channels, including print, web, visual media, SharePoint and emerging communication platforms; social media experience an asset – with demonstrated experience in leveraging the latest communication vehicles to effectively communicate to employees.

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment, with an ability to remain calm under pressure.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with meticulous attention to detail.

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and work independently.

  • A high degree of comfort briefing, supporting, and engaging with senior decision-makers or C-suite executives.

  • Proven ability to build and maintain meaningful relationships with colleagues across a range of functions.

  • An ability to solve problems and work in a matrixed environment.

  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to take on tasks outside of core responsibilities.

  • A commitment to curiosity, and professional and personal growth.

  • Excellent knowledge of business-related software such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.

  • Strong planning, time management and organizational skills; ability to multi-task across many projects simultaneously and ability to meet tight deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction, but with regular reporting and updates.

  • Discrete ability to recognize and appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information.
