Embedded Software Engineer – Subsystem Lead

LeoStella is a state-of-the-art small satellite design and manufacturing company based in the Seattle area. Position Description:

At LeoStella, we’ve recently introduced our next-generation satellite platform, LS-300, to meet the varied and evolving needs of government and commercial customers seeking access to space.  The new satellite has enhanced capabilities to accommodate heavier and more complex payloads while performing demanding missions.

We are looking for a technical lead to own design and development of embedded software for a critical satellite subsystem.  You’ll work collaboratively across our embedded systems group and work closely with subsystem leads.  As a technical lead for a mission critical subsystem, you’ll make a large business impact across multiple critical programs from design to execution.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead software design and architecture for critical satellite subsystem, such as power, guidance & navigation, and payload, to be used across our product line and for critical government and commercial programs.

  • Own execution of work for your subsystem – status/standup, sprint planning, tasking, etc. 

  • Design, development, and test next-generation flight software and related test scripts

  • Work directly with required component owners to meet requirements

  • Ensure that adequate test, inspection, and analysis is performed to verify compliance with requirements

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers from multiple disciplines (electrical, systems, mechanical, etc.) to deliver mission-critical products on-time and on-budget.

    Required Qualifications:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering

  • Over 8 years’ experience delivering and maintaining commercial software in a production environment

  • Experience working on embedded software for satellites and related components, such as power, guidance & navigation, and payload

  • Expertise in engineering clean and maintainable C/C++ and Python code

  • Expertise in Embedded Linux, ideally including related build systems (Buildroot, Yocto, etc.) and writing drivers

  • Proven experience leading cross-functional teams to deliver products on-time and on-budget.

  • Proven ability to lead & mentor teams of earlier career software or test engineers

  • Outstanding problem solving skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

    Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Xilinx; Ultrascale+, ZCU102, KV/KR-260 or FPGA’s

  • Linux Expertise specifically using Buildroot build system for custom RFS’s, and board bring-up for Linux.

  • Familiarity with hardware interfaces (GPIO, I2C, SPI, CAN, USART, PHY, SpaceWire, Cameralink, RS-422), or high-speed interfaces (10G Ethernet, DMA, PCIe)

  • Experience with Real Time Operating Systems, including FreeRTOS

  • Familiarity with boot loaders, u-boot or Barebox

  • Proven ability to lead teams of earlier career software and test engineers

  • Space Industry Experience, and familiarity with relevant components of satellite development, potential examples include:

  • ADCS, Discrete components (GPS, Radios, RW, MRM, TR, ST), optical payloads, SWIL and HWIL testbeds, Test Automation, Cryptography

  • Experience with SpaceWire communication protocol

    Compensation & Benefits:

  • Compensation range is $117-186K + 10% target bonus

  • Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case by case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

  • Base salary is one part of your total rewards package - you may also be eligible for up to 10% potential bonuses. Additional employee benefits are detailed below as well.

  • Employee Benefits include:

  • 401(k) – Matching 50% of contributions, up to 6% of base salary

  • Supplemental paid parental leave.

  • Paid Time Off and Flexible Schedule: You may accrue 156 hours paid time off per year, in addition to 8 company holidays.  You may also have the choice to take Flexible Friday off every other week.
