ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
The Isotope Research and Production Department (IP) is part of the Nuclear Particle Physics Directorate. The program's focus is three-fold: to produce and distribute radioisotopes for applications in industry, environment, and medicinal applications, maintain infrastructure, and perform research and development for new applications. The major facilities of the IP Department include the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP), the Cyclotron facility and the Radionuclide Research and Production Laboratory, hosting two suites of hot cells. The BLIP utilizes high intensity proton beams of up to 200 MeV and the cyclotron uses protons from 13 to 19 MeV to irradiate targets.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
We are seeking an Isotope Operator to join our team. The IP Operator will aid in the research and process of isotopes at the target processing laboratory. In this role you will be responsible for working in the laboratory performing chemical processing and separations. Further conducting analytical measurements to assess purity and quantification. The main program focus is to produce and distribute radioisotopes for nuclear medicine research and clinical practice and to develop radioisotopes for new applications in medicine and science.This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performing chemical processing following procedures
Disposal of radioactive, hazardous and mixed waste
Assist in inventory of supplies and general upkeep of laboratory
Performing maintenance and minor equipment repairs
Writing and revising procedures and other technical documents
Assisting in planning, designing and implementation of equipment and facility improvements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires equivalent of a bachelor's degree in a related scientific field such as Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
Must be able to be trained on basic chemistry laboratory skills
Must be able to be trained to read and interpret analytical data
Must be able to perform all duties while following all appropriate safety measures
Must have basic Microsoft Word and Excel skills
Must have capacity to be trained on different computer software to run equipment
Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
Must have clear and concise oral and written communication skills
Must be detail oriented and capable of multi-tasking
Ability to communicate and work with multiple different groups and disciplines across the laboratory
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Master's degree or higher in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or similar physical science
Minimum of three years progressively responsible related experience
Experience working in a chemical lab or production environment
Experience with handling radioactivity
Experience in separations and analytical characterization
Experience analyzing large data sets in Microsoft Excel using conditional formatting and function analysis
Experience writing documents in Microsoft Word fit for regulatory submission and review
Experience writing operating procedures, analytical methods, and other process-based cGMP documentation
Analytical chemistry equipment knowledge and experience (Balance, pH, ICP-OES/MS, HPGe)
Experience working in a cGMP / cGLP environment
Ability to evaluate, select, and apply standard scientific techniques to solve a wide range of complex problems
Understanding of Accelerator Safety Envelopes and other accelerator and nuclear related CFR
Experience working with detailed inventory control procedures
Working knowledge and/or experience with dosimetry modeling (such as MicroShield)
Skills in basic machining (lathe, mill, drill press etc.) and basic shop
Forklift/overhead crane experience
Environmental, Health, and Safety Considerations:
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds

Appointment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
This is a fully onsite position located at BNL
Valid drivers license

This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $68,950 - $89,267 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
