ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts, and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is a leader of global particle physics experiments to explore the fundamental constituents of nature with ultimate precision and to discover phenomena that signal physics beyond the Standard Model. A permanent Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) violates time reversal invariance (T) and parity invariance (P), and assuming CPT conservation CP invariance. This would be New Physics beyond the Standard Model. A novel experiment using a polarized proton storage ring in the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) tunnel is under study. Currently, the best hadronic EDM experiment is for the neutron, limited by statistics. The AGS can produce 108 times more polarized protons compared to polarized neutrons for the neutron EDM experiments, and protons much live longer thus it promises it will be at least 103 times more sensitive. BNL is an ideal place for such an experiment for its experts and facility, including the high-intensity polarized sources for protons, deuterons, and other nuclei developed as part of both the ongoing RHIC and the approved EIC programs.

The C-AD has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will study the feasibility of stochastic cooling for a proposed proton EDM ring. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge, exciting and challenging research in the design of stochastic cooling system for the proton EDM storage ring, calculate beam/spin systematic effects, develop efficient and high-precision simulation programs, etc. This role has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop or extend existing stochastic cooling model to apply it to the low energy storage ring, and benchmark results with existing models

  • Study the interplay between Intra-Beam Scattering (IBS) and nonlinearities, track beam distribution evolution with stochastic cooling and determine beam emittance growth rate for the pEDM storage ring, including estimated spin coherence time

  • Calculate the beam and spin systematics of the lattice

  • Disseminate research findings via paper publications and external presentations

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Accelerator Physics, or a related field

  • Experience with accelerator and beam simulation tools such as MADX, Bmad and ZGOUBI

  • Solid background in accelerator physics, beam dynamics, and numerical simulations

  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills

  • A record of working successfully with other scientists and engineers

  • Research experience demonstrated through publications and/or presentations

  • Experience in parallel computational techniques, including GPU programming

  • Demonstrated understanding of basic accelerator physics principles for beamlines, synchrotrons, and storage rings

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of nonlinear dynamics and resonance phenomena in circular accelerators

  • Knowledge of beam cooling in accelerators

  • Knowledge of spin dynamics in accelerators

  • Experience working in UNIX/Linux environments

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $70200 - $92150 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • This is a fully onsite position located at BNL

  • This position is for a 2-year research project

  • May require domestic and international travel

  • Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events

Brookhaven employees are subject to restrictions related to participation in Foreign Government Talent Recruitment Programs, as defined and detailed in United States Department of Energy Order 486.1A. You will be asked to disclose any such participation at the time of hire for review by Brookhaven.
