Job Summary

The Visualization Laboratory (VisLab) is part of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology\'s core research facilities. The VisLab offers resources to support a wide variety of projects for research such as scientific visualization, image analysis and quantification, high-speed video, macro photography, publication graphics, and additional capabilities in support of visualization. The resources are provided to users through a broad variety of state-of-the-art hardware and software operations. The Visualization Laboratory is open to all faculty, students, and staff on the UIUC campus, as well as approved users from other universities and industry. The function of the Visualization Laboratory Manager is to (1) manage the day-to-day operations of the VisLab, (2) provide research support on scientific visualization and related topics, (3) educate and train researchers on the use of equipment and services available at the VisLab and (4) act as a liaison with other campus units.

Duties & Responsibilities

Management (35%)

  • Manage the Visualization Laboratory as a viable, state-of-the-art resource for researchers.
  • Ensure functionality and operation of all lab resources (instruments, hardware, and software), including software installation, maintenance, testing, updates and some hardware diagnostics, troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Perform first-level systems support for VisLab workstations in a mixed-OS environment (Windows, Mac, Linux), and coordinate with systems administration staff for additional support and repairs.
  • Write technical and non-technical documentation of projects and services to support VisLab equipment and techniques when necessary.
  • Develop and implement VisLab policies where appropriate to ensure smooth operations.
  • Manage the self-supporting activities and budget of the VisLab.
  • Manage and refer projects to the VisLab graphic services team.

Research Support & Education (35%)

  • Train facility users on instruments, hardware, and software located in the VisLab.
  • Develop and teach technical workshops on visualization and related topics, such as image analysis for researchers. Create and foster a community of users to share best practices, tips and lessons learned.
  • Respond to inquiries from users and seek to resolve questions and meet requests in a timely manner.
  • Provide consultation support to researchers at all levels by assessing researchers\' visualization and computational needs or challenges and develop strategies to address those.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of new technologies and techniques in visualization and other related areas, such as image analysis, and disseminate such information to current and potential users.
  • Conduct VisLab tours and organize educational events with the objective of educating researchers about the equipment and services available.
  • Assist faculty members with funding proposals, providing technical details and justifications upon request.

Relationship Building (20%)

  • Collaborate with other Beckman and campus units in providing a cohesive set of resources related to visualization and other related areas such as image analysis.
  • Engage with Beckman Institute research groups and researchers from across campus to ensure the VisLab\'s usefulness to their research and ways of continuing offering relevant services and equipment.
  • Act as a liaison with other campus units, such as the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, that provide research r sources complementary to those offered by the VisLab and build long-term relationships with such units.
  • Promote the graphic services team to other campus units.

Other (10%)

  • Supervise VisLab staff, which includes the graphic services team.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

*Minimum Qualifications*

  1. A. Bachelor\'s degree in a scientific discipline closely related to the position

    AND

    two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a laboratory or similar setting closely related to the position

  2. One (1) year (12 months) of supervisory and/or administrative experience.

NOTE: A Master\'s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.

*Preferred Qualifications*

Master\'s degree in computer science, visualization, information science or related fields of study. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience.
