The research group of Dr. Dawna Duff is looking to recruit a Research Scientist. The VARY (Vocabulary and Reading in Youth and Children) Lab investigates the development of word learning and reading comprehension, taking an individual differences approach that includes children from specialized populations including developmental language disorders (DLD) and dyslexia. Of particular interest is the process of contextual word learning while reading, in which the reader needs to infer the meaning of a novel word. The successful candidate will investigate contextual word learning in children in 4th and 5th grade, who have typical language development and DLD, in particular the effect of a metalinguistic intervention and semantic diversity on learning. The ideal candidate for this position will be highly motivated to both work independently to successfully execute the required studies outlined in our NIH-funded R21 grant, and will also thrive in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment where they interact with other scientists (including collaborators at other sites), and research assistants.

Duties and responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Plan, direct and conduct advanced research experiments

  • Maintain laboratory operations, including supervision of research assistants

  • Evaluate and analyze data in R or other analytic platform

  • Summarize and publish results in scientific journals

  • Mentor and train Masters and undergraduate students in research

  • Present results at national and international conference, and communicate with a variety of collaborators

  • Contribute to authorship of grant proposals

  • Independent work, with general guidance on research objectives and project assignments, with periodic review of results with the Principal Investigator

    Job Requirements:

  • Masters degree in speech language pathology, developmental psychology, educational psychology, or a related field

  • Research experience beyond the Master's degree level

  • Strong project management skills, including detail orientation, attentiveness to deadlines, and supervisory skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Strong writing and analytical skills

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion within the predetermined methodology

  • Advanced training and expertise in:

  • experimental design and experimental paradigms for assessment of word learning in children (both encoding and retention)

  • expected developmental trajectories in semantic and phonological aspects of word learning

  • theoretical underpinnings of individual differences in word learning

  • data analysis and interpretation of experimental research in children

  • word learning in children with communication or language disorders, such as developmental language disorders, dyslexia, autism spectrum disorder

Preferred:

  • Experience in methodology related to eye movements while reading, or capability to learn this methodology

  • Understanding of the role of semantic diversity in word learning, or capability to develop this expertise

    Additional Information:

Salary Range: $50,000 annually. VISA sponsorship will be considered.
