National Park Service Maintenance Worker (Sanitation) in United States

Responsibilities These positions are assigned to the Buildings, Utilities & Sanitation Unit, within the Division of Facilities Maintenance at Shenandoah National Park. The positions perform simple and routine work in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, painting, and other related trades. The primary purpose / primary duties of the positions support park Sanitation needs by cleaning and maintaining comfort stations. Duties include: clean, sanitize, restock and maintain park comfort stations, chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities perform minor plumbing repairs such as tighten or replace fittings and fixtures, replace faucet washers, unplug drains, etc. perform minor electrical work such as replace switches, outlets, bulbs, etc. remove trash and recycled materials perform minor carpentry repairs such as replace picnic table boards, repair broken windows, adjust or replace hinges, latches, etc. perform minor painting such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels perform routine maintenance on campground sites/picnic areas to restore areas to original appearances operate fork lift and light vehicles to load and transport materials and supplies to work sites These Shenandoah National Park positions will be duty stationed at either Park Headquarters Maintenance Area near Luray, VA or Big Meadows Maintenance Area near mile-marker 51 on Skyline Drive. Salary range for the Headquarters position is $23.65 - $27.59 per hour. Salary range for the Big Meadows position is $23.72 - $27.67 per hour. The position is CAREER-SEASONAL (subject to furlough). Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. It is anticipated you will work approximately 9-11 months (mid-January through November) each service; and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the Park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern Park that provided a "western Park experience". Due to the Park's easy accessibility to D.C and other highly populated areas along the east coast, visitation exceeds 1.4 million visitors annually which results in significant resource protection and visitor management issues and incidents. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. This is a Career-Seasonal appointment. You will work approximately 9-11 months each service year, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the service year. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Work Schedule: You will be required to work weekends and holidays; may occasionally may be required to work on-call, evenings, shift work, and/or overtime. Government housing is not available. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Qualifications The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations (X-118-C) will be used in determining applicants' qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through the experience shown in your written resume and your responses to the questionnaire that you possess the competencies to perform the duties of this position without more than normal supervision. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another. Physical Demands: Work from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets-up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
