IRB Coordinator - Office of Human Subject Protections - Georgetown University

The Office of Human Subject Protections (OHSP) (https://researchservices.georgetown.edu/human-subjects-protection/) serves as the official oversight office for human subject research activities at Georgetown University, and reports to the Medical Center Dean for Research and the Vice Provost of Research for the Main Campus.

Job Overview

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) Coordinator supports OHSP activities, which provides operational support to Georgetown’s IRB. They serve as a liaison between the IRB and research community, and assist IRB chairs and members in ensuring that the rights and welfare of human subjects are protected throughout their participation in research projects.

As well, they assist the IRB Analyst in the management of the confidential review and approval process of proposed research activities involving human subjects at GU.

They employ a basic understanding of many complex and sometimes disparate regulatory and ethical issues and how they apply to GU research. They work with the IRB team to assure GU’s compliance with different federal regulations, to facilitate research and to address ethical considerations.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare IRB agendas and minutes for all IRB committees

  • Conduct and document administrative IRB reviews of study team modifications and study closures

  • Create user accounts in the HURON IRB system

  • Monitor department email account and appropriately direct those that need other team member’s input

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

The IRB Coordinator reports directly to Senior IRB and Reliance Coordinator with focused oversight for IRB activities of the IRB staff.

They work collaboratively with the Office of Research Quality Assurance and the Office of Research Oversight for compliance or conflicts of interest issues involving human subjects research; as well as with the GU research community members and other ancillary review offices, such as radiation safety and biomedical safety.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an ethics, scientific, engineering or healthcare administrative discipline [note: consideration/acceptance will be given to alternate degree fields based upon the nature and depth of the research experience related to this position]

  • At least 1 year work experience demonstrating highly effective communications skills and ability to work on multiple projects

  • Computer proficiency - including MS Word, Excel, internet browsers, and email

  • Because the IRB review process is conducted via an electronic web-based system, comfortable reading on a screen rather than paper and to easily switch back and forth between screens to obtain and synthesize information

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of work experience that includes human subjects’ review/oversight; and interaction with human subjects as a research staff person - or any position involving the application of complex regulatory systems to individuals and work activities

  • Comfort with making judgment calls in ambiguous situations

  • Highly organized at tracking and prioritizing work

  • Outstanding attention to detail

  • Ability to write and speak in concise, accurate, and intelligible manner

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Diplomatic and professional interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work well as part of a team in conditions of high volumes and rigid deadlines

The expected pay range for this position is $47,586 - $55,000 per year.

Georgetown University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity and external market pay for comparable jobs.
