Distinguishing Features of Work

This is manual work in construction and general maintenance activities. As work experience is gained, employees may be assigned to somewhat more difficult tasks. Work is performed under the direction of a supervisor who issues general instructions for routine jobs and specific instructions at the beginning of each new job when departures are made from established procedures.

Examples of Work Performed
  • Assists in preparing asphalt, concrete, and other street repair materials.
  • Performs manual work in the building and repair of roads, culverts and bridges; and other related tasks in the maintenance and construction of public facilities.
  • Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, timber, leaves, and similar items.
  • Assists skilled and semiskilled workers in varied building maintenance and repair activities.
  • Shovels snow and breaks ice from streets and walks and loads snow onto trucks or piles it in designated places.
  • Sweeps and cleans streets and gutters, and collects and loads refuse into a truck or movable can.
  • May trim and water lawns, trim shrubs and trees, spade, rake, and otherwise prepare ground and assist in related ground maintenance work.
  • Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work
  • Ability to acquire within a reasonable period of time, knowledge of the procedures, tools, equipment and materials used in maintenance work
  • Ability to follow simple oral or written instructions
  • Ability to maneuver self into riding machines with two foot steep first step, and onto frame or fender as required to perform fluid/filter check daily and maintenance every 100 hours or as needed
  • Ability to operate trucks, other heavy equipment, a concrete mixer and concrete saw
  • Ability to maintain work safely on slippery and/or wet surfaces
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions
  • Ability to shovel, snow, sand, gravel, asphalt, to or from dump truck bed
  • Ability to tolerate airborne nuisances and fumes associated with open grounds, pavement construction, and windy conditions
  • Ability to safely and effectively swing a 20 pound sledgehammer against brick, concrete, or similar substances
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 110 pounds for up to 20 feet
  • Ability to pull, shove, or otherwise maneuver items weighing up to 300 pounds requiring a lifting force of 110 pounds for up to 10 feet
  • Ability to lift concrete rocks weighing up to 60 pounds and toss overhead into a truck
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate a jackhammer and a chain saw tolerating constant vibration and with a sustained grip
  • Ability to use hands and wrists for turning, grasping, power gripping, pinching and finger manipulation as required to perform work tasks
  • Ability to be continuously performing tasks that require one to push, pull, climb (ladders and in and out of vehicular equipment), bend, twist, turn, reach, stand, kneel, squat, crawl and walk about (up to a half mile at a time) for most of an eight-hour shift
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to acquire (within 60 days of start date) and maintain a valid Kansas class A commercial driver\'s license with tanker\'s endorsement and without airbreak endorsement.
  • This position will require working outdoors in inclement weather including but not limited to, rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, and humidity plus snow and ice removal and/or emergency resp onse operations that may include operating equipment and vehicles on overnight shifts, weekends and in low-light and low visibility conditions, or other adverse weather conditions.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

  • A valid Kansas Drivers License at the time of hire is required.

  • Must be able to obtain a validKansas class A commercial driver\'s license with tanker\'s endorsement and without airbreak endorsementwithin the first 60 days of employment.

  • Prior experience in street maintenance, construction or landscaping preferred

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
