Shenandoah University Associate Professor in Production Management / Stage Management in Winchester, Virginia

Shenandoah Conservatory is accepting applications for an Associate Professor in Production Management / Stage Management. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.

Located at the head of the beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, VA, the Conservatory is now home to over 650 students from across the nation and globe enrolled in baccalaureate, masters and doctoral curricula in the areas of music, theater, and dance, and includes a dynamic faculty of more than 120, half of whom are full-time. Based on the main campus of Shenandoah University, the Conservatory is within easy driving distance of Washington, DC and is easily accessible internationally via Dulles International Airport. Shenandoah Conservatory seeks a dynamic and collaborative theatre professional in production management/stage management to join its Theatre Division. Overseeing all production components, this newly created position will participate in season planning, consult with administrative departments on production calendar development, and participate with senior theatre leadership in strategic planning and general management to support a successful academic production season. This faculty position will teach courses and advise students in stage management and production management. This full-time, career-contract track appointment begins August 15th, 2024.

The successful candidate will:

  • Coordinate all production components of the academic theatre season, including overseeing the production budget and managing theatre facilities and production schedules;

  • Teach courses in stage management and production management (one class per semester in addition to supervisory roles for practicum placements and internships);

  • Mentor student production and stage managers during the academic production season (consisting of 3 musicals, 2 plays, 1 opera, 1 unsupported play and 2 dance concerts);

  • Serve as academic advisor to stage management students, guiding internships and career placement opportunities;

  • Serve as PSM for one show every other year (with student ASMs); and

  • Work with Executive Director of Performances and Engagement and Performance Operations staff to assist with personnel, equipment, and facilities needs for Theatre productions, Performing Arts Live (PAL) guest artist series and other high profile events taking place in theatre facilities.

Required Skills

Required Qualifications:

  • An MFA in Stage Management or Production Management, or equivalent professional experience, is required.

  • A minimum of 4 years progressively responsible experience in theatre or dance stage management and production management.

  • Working knowledge in Actor’s Equity, SDC, USA 829, and LORT contracts.

  • Competence in Google Suite

  • Understanding of the production process, good communication skills, good organizational skills, ability to multitask, ability to prioritize and manage competing priorities.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Member of AEA and AGMA Membership

  • Significant experience teaching in higher education

  • Stage Management Experience in Dance and/or Opera

  • Experience in National (or International) Tours
