Overview

The site staff physician, Team Health, reports to the Chief Medical Officer and Associate Medical Director of Team Health. This position has broad accountabilities and the leadership latitude to review, design, implement, and improve occupational medicine care systems and processes to achieve optimal quality provided in an efficient and productive manner. The staff physician works collaboratively with the Team Health leadership. In addition to serving as one of the primary medical services providers, the incumbent will play a key role in the development and coordination of quality assurance standards and professional medical protocols with and for other Team Health physicians and mid-level providers. The staff physician will practice medicine according to worker's compensation laws, local, state and federal regulatory requirements, and promote the practice of occupational medicine according to the Code of Ethical Conduct of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Responsibilities

  1. Provide evidenced based direct patient care for examinations and treatments of occupationally related health conditions. Examines, evaluates, assesses, obtains appropriate diagnostic tests, and provides immediate treatment, as needed, for illnesses or injuries occurring in a wide variety of workplaces and settings.

  2. Act as the gatekeeper for all assigned employees receiving treatment for work related injuries.

  3. Establishes treatment plans for Team Health clients, prescribes diagnostics and medications; completes referrals to appropriate medical specialists, as indicated; refers to non-physician providers such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, other rehabilitation; communicates with other providers in a team approach; communicates patient status and treatment plans with client employers. Plans care emphasizing cost-effective use of medical resources using occupational medicine principles. Evaluates interventions and promptly changes plan of care if desired outcomes are not achieved as expected.

  4. Performs occupational health medical exams pre-placement and annual physicals with deference to the client's work environment and job duties; performs Department of Transportation (DOT) examinations as a certified FMCSA Medical Examiner; performs Independent Medical Evaluations (IME) and accepts medical specialty consults, as appropriate; performs environmental assessment of work sites, as needed and requested. Acts as medical review officer (MRO) for requesting client companies relative to their pre-placement and periodic drug and alcohol screening needs.

  5. Works collaboratively with Team Health staff including but not limited to case managers, clinical nurses/technicians, physical therapist(s), specialty consulting physicians. Works with Team Health staff ensure timely and accurate completion of medical records, charts, and communications.

  6. Makes recommendations to client employers relative to their employees' work status and job duties potential; when requested meets with employers to discuss health and safety needs and conducts on-site workplace assessment. Serves as medical surveillance officer for client companies as needed.

  7. Establishes and regularly monitors all levels of care provided to Team Health clients; reviews care provided by other physicians and clinicians; offers medical judgment and negotiates alterations in treatment plans, as appropriate, to ensure all clinicians practice with objectivity, integrity, and in keeping with established practice guidelines.

  8. Works with the site and regional operations manager to ensure operations are consistent with medical practice guidelines, policies, and professional standards for occupational medicine; collaborates with clinical staff for development, implementation, and revision of policies affecting practice parameters, patient care protocols, clinical judgment, and quality clinical outcomes for Team Health and HM Worksclients.

  9. Represents HMH Team Health on a variety of internal and external committees, task forces, and specialty meetings; actively participates in development of integrated programs such as wellness, risk-minimizing, and preventive medicine, as well as a system-wide occupational health program. Must be able to collaborate with other professionals, such as industrial hygienists, safety engineers, ergonomists, infection control, and occupational health nurses, on such efforts.

  10. Maintains a high level of awareness of changes within the industry through reading, seminar attendance, and other forms of continuing medical education. Promotes, supports, and engages in projects and activities which will develop or improve Team Health.

  11. Complies with and has the knowledge and skills to assist organizations to be compliant with state and federal regulations relating to occupational and environmental medicine, as well as general public health laws.

  12. Has the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize potential chemical, physical, and biological environmental causes of health concern as it relates to workers and the general public. These issues most often include but are not limited to musculoskeletal hazards, air, water, or ground contamination by natural artificial pollutants.

  13. Maintain up to date occupational health knowledge and skills through educational seminars and workshops, with approval by Team Health leadership.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of medicine; completion of an accredited residency program in Occupational Medicine or comparable areas such as Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, or Internal Medicine.

  • An active license to practice medicine in the state of New Jersey upon hire.

  • Obtain ABMS Board certification within 5 years of residency/fellowship training and ensure renewal as per Team Health leadership guidance.

  • Medical Review Officer (MRO) certification OR ability to acquire as early as 3 months of hire and no more than 12 months of hire.

  • Certification as DOT medical examiner preferred OR ability to acquire as early as 3 months of hire and no more than 12 months of hire.

  • Active DEA and CDS license. BLS certification

  • A thorough, current, and working knowledge of: OSHA regulations; toxic exposure protocols; workers' compensation rules, regulations and patient management; Fitness for Duty and Return to Work; Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol screening rules and regulations

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • A high level of interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with a wide range of patients, client companies, staff, and other medical professionals. Planning and organizational skills necessary to develop, implement, and evaluate all facets of the occupational health program's efficiency, effectiveness, and quality.
