Armed Services YMCA of The U S A Staff Accountant - Military Family Services in Woodbridge, Virginia

This position is eligible for hybrid work (2 days a week in office). 

Salary commensurate with experience $70-75K.

Summary

The Staff Accountant will be assigned to and responsible for the accounting functions for a portfolio of Armed Services YMCA’s Military Family Services, including financial assistance services managed by the Vice President (VP) of Finance in support of federal contracts managed by the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Military Family Services.  As a result, this position will have a dual reporting relationship to the VP, Finance and SVP, Military Family Services. 

The Staff Accountant will manage daily general accounting activities including billing, accounts receivables, accounts payables, financial reporting, and cash management. The Staff Accountant will be tasked with maintaining and auditing current processes, procedures and controls, and as needed, updating or developing new processes to support the Military Family Services portfolio.

The Staff Accountant will have a flair for finding the errant needle in the haystack, a talent for balancing small details with the big picture, a tenacity for follow up and tracking down the answer, and ability to uncover more efficient ways to achieve an outcome.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Managing the general accounting for ASYMCA’s two government contracts that fund gym memberships for eligible military personnel and their dependents, including all A/P and A/R functions, reviewing and verifying accuracy of vendor invoices, processing ACH and credit card payments, printing and mailing check payments, outstanding payment reconciliation, cash management, uploading invoices through a procurement portal, creating monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports.

  • Manage the general accounting functions for ASYMCA’s Operation Ride Home holiday travel assistance funds, including cash management, fund disbursement to branches, weekly tracking of airline costs, airline miles and gift cards, verifying invoices for payment, annual budgeting, and monthly and year-end reconciliation.

  • Manage general accounting functions for a grant disbursement program including budgeting, payables, financial reporting, and auditing documents required for payment.

  • Manage general accounting functions for the organization’s membership management system Daxko Operations, including weekly reporting and cash management, review and management of credit card processor charges and fees, accounts payables and budgeting.

  • Perform general account analysis and bank reconciliations on a monthly basis; Produce and issue timely and complete consolidated financial statements and reporting on monthly, quarterly and annual closings.

  • Manage the production of the department annual budget, forecasts, and calculate variances.

  • Manage and produce Program department specific reports on monthly and annual basis.

  • Maintain corporate accounting policies, procedures and internal controls to ensure conformance with GAAP and internal accounting and reporting guidelines.

  • Adhere to all internal Finance policy and deadlines set by ASYMCA HQ Finance department.

  • Perform general audit and 990 annual requests and be available during crucial times of the year including the annual audit and annual budget.

  • Maintain internal controls for the consistency, accuracy and integrity of systems, policies, processes and data.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and a minimum of 5 years progressive professional experience in one or more Accounting functions (AP, AR) OR equivalent combination of experience and education

  • YMCA, non-profit and/or federal contracts experience preferred

  • Expert ability using Microsoft Office, specifically Excel spreadsheets

  • Robust technical background preferred with ability to learn and work with new software systems, troubleshoot current systems, and develop in depth knowledge through both on the job and formal training opportunities

  • Experience with Sage Intacct accounting system and/or Truist payables and invoice management system a plus  

  • Excellent project management skills, eye for detail and dedication to accuracy

  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills, collaborative attitude and a positive team approach
